The Powers of the Mind

Chapter 1 by guitman86 guitman86

All your life you have known you had a mind more keen and able than those around you. Often you would hear people whispering to each other of all your abilities, using terms like "magic" or "witchcraft". You always knew better though. The things you have done have all come about from your willpower. Never once have you uttered an incantation or mixed a potion or attempted to cast a spell. You simply decide what you want to happen, and it does.

Yes, of course there are limits to what you are able to do. You cannot call down fire from the heavens, transform yourself into weird monsters, or summon ancient demons to do your bidding, your powers are much more subtle. The bending of the physical realm around you, is the ability you possess. Bending light around yourself so that others cannot see you, bending gravity to lift objects without touching them or even to lift yourself off the ground, and tricking your body into thinking it is breathing air when it actually water or even nothing, a vacuum of emptiness. You bend incoming light giving yourself the ability to see things very far off in the distance or around corners. You can even slow down your perception of the world around you to a standstill, allowing you to move freely about the world as if time itself fears your presence.

By the time you are twelve, you learn to control the things around you, but quickly learn that others are very fearful of the power you possess. Your teenage years, you learn to hide the gift. Soon, your friends and even your family believe that the events they had witnessed during your childhood were just their imaginations.

High school was tough. Though no one else knew of your powers, you still had very few friends. Depression always a factor during the four hard years. But finally you are done, and soon enough, it is time for you to move away from your family. You tell them you have a real estate job lined up in Houston, but in reality, you really have no clue where you are going. You pack up your belongings into the car your parents gave you, a 1998 Honda Civic, and drive away from your old home. You figure Houston is as good of a place as any to go, so soon that is where you find yourself.

Living it up in Houston?
