The Near Fall of Earth

The Near Fall of Earth

Halo 3, but with WH40K help.

Chapter 1 by DieMaus DieMaus

Klara stood in the center of New Mombasa, looking up into the night sky. The Covenant had found and invaded Earth. The last few hours had been chaos and all across the city, with the rest of the world remaining mostly safe. Whatever it was the Covenant wanted, it was near the city it seemed. She checked her MA5, it's ammunition counter stating the weapon's magazine was still full. She had gotten separated from the rest of her Squad, and the ODST's that had joined them. She thanked her luck for the NMPD uniform being black, helping her to hide in the darkness from the patrols of Covenant troops. She stuck to the many, many alleyways and corridors. She kept herself hidden, knowing if she were to get into an actual fight, she would never last long enough to even flee.

"Alright K, you'll get yourself out of the city and then link up with the rest of the people with guns... you might actually stand a chance with others to protect you..."

She thought to herself as she hid in a dumpster, it's lid was slightly propped up to allow her to see out through a small crack in from it's rim to it's lid. She watched a big Brute slap a Grunt a good few feet after it had seemed to speak up against it, in whatever it's orders had been. The Grunt hadn't seemed to get back up, and the rest of them started to rapidly search the courtyard they were in, which made her think they were looking for something or another. And that was quite terrifying to the woman, hiding in her thin walled dumpster. A few plasma rounds would cut through the 'armor' of the dumpster and leave her open to direct hits, and her joke of body armor would do nothing against them. She slowly and quietly closed the lid and curled up in the stinking garbage and hoped that none of them would search her hiding spot.

Klara woke up late the next day, still alive it seemed. She grunted to herself as she sat up. She cautiously cracked the lid open, peering outside to see if there was anything of note outside the bin. Her eyes flicked around curiously, filled with caution and less then mild worry. She re-checked her MA5 and nodded to herself. She slowly climbed out and lowered the lid silently again. She cleared both directions down the alley in quick succession. She then starts heading deeper into the alleyway, her movements were slow and methodical as she walked. Placing each foot down slowly and cautiously, making sure there was never any items below her feet. Her earpiece went off for the first time in a few hours, if her continual sleep was anything to go by earlier.

"All UNSC and PD Forces are to effect an immediate fighting withdrawal to the North-West at heading 315 along the bridge. Otherwise, head immediately West along the Southern peninsula. Godspeed."

Then there was silence once more. She checked the street she was on and started her way west, having been headed straight to the East just before the alert. This would very unpleasantly bring her right across at least one main street. She crouched down at the edge of the alley and the main street. Seeing nothing on the street she took a few steps back and ran, having given herself a good head start of about 15 meters. Klara scrambles across the road as a plasma bolt hits the corner of a building right as she passed it, safe. She didn't look back as she ran, knowing to engage whatever shot her would simply be getting herself pinned down and dealt with.

Klara cradled her MA5 and pulled it close to her chest plate as she ran. While she didn't want to get into a decisive engagement, or even a light skirmish. She certainly didn't want to be running around New Mombasa without a weapon. While both would more then likely mean , one was a far higher chance of then the other. At least the presence and operation of her MA5 meant she could go down fighting instead of simply whimpering and waiting to die. She ran as fast as her weary legs could carry her through the alley, hoping if anything was following her it would be far slower then herself, or too stupid to track her properly. She ran for several minutes until deciding she was safe enough and slowed down to a sort of jog. She looked up into the night sky balefully, as if her glares into orbit could do a thing to stop the Covenant ships in orbit, ripping the UNSC Fleet to shreds. She found herself another good hiding spot and curled up, and cried herself asleep as her world burned around her.

What Wakes Her?
