"Some of this we have found out the hard way," he mumbled before looking up at the princess. "It seems that the creatures we are dealing with are indeed tentacle monsters."

"We already knew that Tagryn."

"Yes... But we didn't know where they came from. I guess we still technically don't, but the first one that was discovered under the city..."

"The book revealed that right?"

"Yes... It was nearly three thousand years ago, but one of your ancestors sealed the beast in a giant tomb underground. They sacrificed much to deal with it. It seems that three of the beasts appeared in the sewers under the city back then too and it was years before they could be dealt with. They managed to kill one of them, but the other two were sealed in separate tombs. Then the children of those beasts were hunted to extinction."

"Why weren't the other two... What did you call them? Ancient Fathers? Why weren't they killed? They got one of them right?"

"Yes. That one was a Mother. They managed to trap it during a pregnancy cycle when it was weak. The Father's don't have a time of weakness, and when they grow that old and powerful, it is almost impossible to deal with even one of them without heavy loses. Ancients are incredibly dangerous princess. And with how quickly these creatures breed, it is likely we have a few hundred of the smaller ones down in the labyrinth at this point."

"Have you informed father yet?"

"I have. He is uncertain of how to deal with this threat."

"Military might seems to be the best option. That and placing bounties for adventurers."

"I fear that you may be correct. The only way to lure the beasts is with something they want... and they have taken more than enough of that..."

Helena felt a powerful ache in her chest at that. Three months under siege from below. Three months of men and women being kidnapped and dragged into the tunnels. "If father is unable to make a decision then it is left to-"

Before Helena could finish her statement, a fearful cry rang out from another place in the castle. Tagryn and Helena both raced to the door and down the hall. The cry had come from the kitchen. Helena easily outpaced the old Sage. When she arrived, two soldiers were already there with a frightened maid curled on the floor behind them. Near the counter where food was prepared for cooking, three slim red tentacles were coming out of the drain that dirty water and pig's blood were poured down. On the floor lay a still writhing tentacle that had been severed by what appeared to be a chopping knife. The maid must have defended herself when the tentacles reached for her. Helena rushed in and drew her sword, slicing through the tentacles in one go. A screech of pain echoed through the drain as the creature pulled back the remains of its limbs. Tagryn placed his hand over the drained and began to chant.

"O Spirit of Flame, come to my hand and grant me thy power. Scorch the flesh and melt the the bone! Flame Geyser!"

A jet of fire erupted from his hand and into the drain. Another cry of pain was let out and then silence.

"It's over. Guards, make sure this drain is covered and... Is she alright?"

On the floor, the maid had a glazed look in her eyes and her hands were working over her body. One had latched onto a breast and was tearing at her blouse. The other was sliding under her skirt. The guards shuffled nervously, trying not to stare. Then Tagryn pointed at the maid's left leg.

"A suction mark... It had grabbed her before she cut off the first tentacle. It must have given her a dose of its venom. Unless someone gives her some relief, she will burn up with lust."

"I'll do it. Men, get that drain and every single one like it in the castle covered and then inform my father that I am taking action on my own until he is ready to do something himself."

The guards scurried to obey while the princess went to the maid. "Get the scribes. I want to send out a rally call to every adventurer in the city. I have a few in mind for my personal party. I'm taking the fight to the tentacles."
