The Bad Ends Field Guide

Survival on an Alternate Earth

Chapter 1 by TVWintergreen TVWintergreen

The Bad End Field Guide, by Doctor Elizabeth Song, is an attempt to set the record straight when it comes to Variant Cultures, Fauna and Flora; most of all the ways in which they should and should not intersect with our own. Most importantly it describes when that intersection is unfavorable, unwelcome or uncertain, and what should be done. This guide seeks to be a guide to our world and it's darkest, strangest corners, however this publication should be read by all denizens, as any reader will find out that even the streets and alleyways outside of your home may be host to Variant lifeforms which will prove to be incredibly dangerous unless properly understood. In mild cases, Variant cultures intersect with our own in ways that our modern society can not avoid and, according to Doctor Song, should not avoid. For those worried about proper and improper methods of interacting in those situations, this book will also prove to be a invaluable.

Doctor Song is a tenured professor of Variant Studies at the famed Miskatonic University out of Boston. She is best known for her work deconstructing the inherently negative view of Variant Cultures, specifically. It is her writing, research and voice that is lent to most testimony in the guide wherever it concerns humanoid Variant types and their interactions with the species harmlessly integrated into common society.

Co-writing and lending their voice to this guide is Doctor Herbert Eastman, Former professor of Variant Biology out the Versailles Medical Institute and current editor of the Variant Sciences Journal. Doctor Eastman's work in Variant Biology and Medicine has been indispensable when it comes to curing and treating variant ailments. His mapping of Variant biology has in many cases provided the modern basis for the safe integration of manageable variants, and the deterrence of those that are immune to reason and negotiation.

Wherever magic is concerned, Doctor Lianne Garde will lend her expertise as a primary contributor. Doctor Garde received her Specialist of Magic Certification from the East Coast Public Academy in Maine and has, since her graduation, contributed to several magical thesis and studies. She is considered among the foremost magical experts in our world.

As you open the used guide a few thin sheets of crude drawings fall out. On further inspection, the sheets are also marked with line upon line of very obscene erotic fiction placed between the pages, possibly as markers. The book itself is occasionally given notation in pen, which is annoying because you did not order a heavily used version, but a 'near mint' copy. The thought of returning it crosses your mind, but the unhinged ramblings of whomever owned this tome previously are a bit too good to pass up.

Other than the strange drawings and crude fiction written between the lines and on added pages, the guide is completely normal.
