Tales of Avaria: The Dragon Layer

This story takes place in the lands of Averia. More can be read about tales within these lands in "The Free Kingdom of Avaria". But this story shall focus on a specific man and his adventure. Before we begin we shall introduce the history of this land "The Kingdom of Avaria is an isolated place, resting on the fringes of the known world. It was founded nearly a thousand years ago by a cabal of sorcerers, fleeing the persecution of less enlightened times. The resulting colony began to attract misfit colonists from across the world, and it wasn't long before the wizards' sanctuary became a chaotic mess of warring tribes and unaligned bandits. Fearing for the future of their home, the founding sorcerers pooled their magic and resources to found a mighty dynasty, one which could hold control over all of Avaria.

With sword and staff they quickly brought the other factions to heel, promising prosperity to those who would join them, and utter destruction for those who would not. Though this strategy was an effective means of forming their kingdom, it failed to keep the peace for long. Weary of the constant battle against rebellion and dissent, the ruling council combined their magic once again to cast a single powerful spell.

As waves of arcane fire burst forth from their towers and spread across the sky, the sorcerers marveled at their own genius. For theirs was not an incantation of destruction, but one of control. To keep the people in line, they would offer them their own sisters, wives, and daughters as tribute. The hearts, minds, and bodies of Avaria's women were henceforth controlled by its ruling castes, to be shaped, withheld, and granted as they see fit.

Hundreds of years have passed since that day, and the kingdom sits on a tipping point. Some of the outermost villages are growing unruly, tired of noblemen passing through and using their women like toys. A colony of elves has sprung up nearby, looking to initiate trade and diplomacy with Avaria, a place they do not fully understand. The millennial celebration of the kingdom's founding is swiftly approaching, bringing its nobles and rising stars together for a great festival and martial tournament. Finally, there are new developments in the laboratories of the kingdom's magicians. Their discoveries have the potential to usher in an era of increased subjugation, or perhaps a new age of freedom and peace."

And now, in Averia, a new adventure begins.

We now follow the adventure of a young man called Jordan Farcourt, an up-and-coming Dragon Slayer.

It is a profession with high risk but high reward as dragon's are one of the few things the kingdom of Averia truely fears. This is due to the dragon's innate resistance to magic making them resistent to their magic, especially their grand control spell.

Besides their natural restance dragon's are difficult to control as lesser dragon's are just too aggresive to control and high dragon's are so powerful that they can resist the spell through magic power alone. A particularly successful dragon slayer can often be awarded nobility and earns great fame among the kingdom.

Jordan's father is a wealthy Merchant that had wanted him to take over his buisness. However Jordan decided to leave his home and seek adventure instead. Jordan had always wished for greater acheivements, like one legendary dragon slayer that got to marry the crown princess that had been by a dragon. Such legends are common because male dragons will choose mates based on beauty and fertility and often keep several females and forming their own harems. On the other hand, female dragons tend to stay loyal to their chosen partners to bear his children, remaining with them until . They are not picky about species either due to one of the notable traits of a dragon is the ability to mate with any species which is why there are so many creatures in legends with dragon blood in ther veins.
