Shipwreck

Shipwreck

You survive a shipwreck on an exotic island and find there's one other person there...

Chapter 1 by Lilyflier Lilyflier

The sounds of the ocean fill your ears. It was a familiar sound, one which comforted you and brought back memories of your childhood on the beach. Your name was John. And you were lying on something quite uncomfortable...sand? A beach? And the sounds of birds squawking and chirping in the distance...this wasn't the ship you'd grown so familiar with waking up in.

It had been weeks since you had heard the sounds of birds. Probably months by this point, cramped on the ship and working tirelessly to maintain the thing. From preparing sails to fixing boards to making sure that one old geezer you forgot the name of stopped hitting on the captain's attractive wife...the usual.

Traveling from continent to continent to make the most profitable trades possible, you hadn't got to know much more than the ship. Long stretches of time at sea left you feeling as though the whole world was the ship, and in a way, you liked that. Getting away from the world, running from your past...that's not worth thinking about right now though.

Right now, you're standing on a beach...and then you see it. The ship. Its broken boards dotting the beach and water filling up the rear end. Stranded on some remote island then and judging by the fact that the ship had a mighty good navigator (good at his job, mind you, of questionable moral standards) the island was unlikely to have been marked on the best of maps.

You began to remember the events leading up to the crash...a few things had gone wrong. Firstly, there was the storm. It was a demonic thing, that you felt sure of despite the fact that you had never been particularly religious. It struck in the dead is night, lighting up the ocean with bolt after bolt of electric discharge, and the rain...

The rain had been terrible. It drenched every last inch of dry clothing within seconds, made it impossible to hear one another over the constant static of millions of droplets hitting the deck. The waves too played a role here, theirs were more destructive because of their will to crash into the sides of the ship. Flinging people back and forth...

Someone had released the anchor too, for whatever reason. That probably swung you into an uncontrollable spin.

The people weren't great either, they would run about shouting like lunatics. One of them grabbed you by the shoulders and just screamed, probably because his best friend had been flung over the side and you knew there was nothing that could be done for him.

"Calm down, man! We've got to keep her steady!" You had tried to say over the storm, but now that you think about it, you probably wouldn't have been calm either if your friend had died that way. Though you never really had any good friends on the ship to be flung over when times got bad...your journal was the closest thing you had to a friend. And that had been washed away in the crash, no doubt.

Which meant this...you looked around now, the beach, the coconut trees, the crabs, the birds...this would have to be your new home.

And that's when you saw her.

Note: this story is set to public mode!

That means you, aspiring writers, no matter what your skill level, are encouraged to create anything you like! I'll try to add on to what you write if you specify that you're ok with that, enjoy! I would prefer that you stick with whatever tense you start with, but I fully understand if that becomes difficult. Same goes for perspective, I don't mind if it's not the 2nd person perspective, but I'd like it to be consistent if possible!
