Ring Of False Memories

John was an ordinary high schooler in his senior year. He would ordinarily spend his free time playing games or fantasising about girls in his class. He had a mostly normal upbringing with his single mother, his twin sister and his older step-sister who was the daughter of his deceased step-father. John never had gotten along with his step-father so he went pretty unbothered when he died of cancer. This though ultimately drew Courtney his step-sister (older by two years) away from him as she couldn’t believe his insensitivity.

John and his minutes younger twin sister grew distant more recently as they fit in two different groups. Her name was Lily and she had always been more athletic and social than John. They used to be close but as Lily hung out with the cheerleaders and jocks she grew more and more cold and harsh to John. So much so that she disowned him as her twin because in her words he was “too big of an unsocial burden to society”. Even on both their eighteenth birthday yesterday she didn’t get him a gift or bother showing up to their shared party. John has loathed her changes.

Finally his relationship with his mother had been in hot water for a while. She always talked about if she only had girls she would be happy. John supposedly looked a lot like his father who ran off with another woman leaving his mother heartbroken the year he and his sister was born. She looked down on John for his recklessness and lazy attitude and had already told him once he was graduated he’d be on his own. Though she had done all she could to attempt to raise him properly John always had ignored her.

Other than all the roughness in his family life John had 2 good friends Rose and Mike who to John’s dismay started dating. Rose was a geeky red head with a fiery attitude and mike was blond and a master of video photography. John met them both in freshman year and introduced them though John who had a crush on Rose never expected Mike to ask her out. They still play games together but John often finds himself leaving early after getting uncomfortable with their lovey dicey attitudes.

High school was just rough in general for John. He felt the world was just so cruel that everything he does seems to backfire in some way. And no one ever seems to forget even when he does the simplest thing wrong. Winter break was going to be over soon and John didn’t want to go back to school.

Right now John found himself literally kicking a can down the road as he made his way towards the convenience store on the corner of his street. John didn’t know what he wanted to do anymore and found himself looking at the ditch to his right. There was a small glow almost like a light in the dark sitting in a small body of water. John climbed his way down making sure he stayed dry and reached towards it.

John yelped as he felt something latch onto his finger though the pain only lasted a second. Pulling back his hand he looked at his finger and found a ring on his finger. Suddenly a flash of light blinded John. John found images running through his mind and a second flash sent thought.

The ring wasn’t any ordinary ring. It was The Ring of False Memories a magic item that’s existed for centuries that allows the user to change, remove, or create new or old memories in any person nearby. John just happened to be the lucky one to find it but he was lost for words.
