I sat in the courtroom, listening to the judge hand down his decision. “You Miss Cartier will pay the Williams five thousand dollars and pay their court costs!” Then he brought down the gavel and made it official. Natalie just stood there with a slight smirk on her face. Even her lawyer was annoyed with her attitude.
“What? I’ll just have my brother pay and repay him later!”
See that was Natalie’s attitude since she turned fifteen. Do the crime then have dad bail her ass out of trouble. Mom always tried to get dad to see that he wasn’t teaching her responsibility by doing that constantly. Then things changed when Natalie turned eighteen, Mom and dad were killed in a collision caused by a drunk driver, I became the one Natalie came to to bail her out. She had a modest twenty-five thousand inheritance from their **** when she turned twenty five, but until then I was made her finance manager.
This was the second time Natalie was found guilty and spared jail as long as she paid the amount the court sat. I was sure that either tonight or tomorrow Natalie would come over and flash her baby blues at me expecting me to write the check to bail her out once again.
I’ve tried mom’s way, about talking to Natalie about her taking responsibility for her actions. I just shook my head knowing that the only thing Natalie heard went in one ear then out the other. I had a crazy idea of how to teach Natalie responsibility be it others or for someone she makes.
I got up and made my way out before Natalie could see me. I went home and waited for our eventual confrontation. A little after eight PM the intercom at the front door sounded
“Hey Big Brother, your favorite sister has come by to see you!”
I got up and went to the front door and unlocked it before returning to my chair. Natalie came in and came over. She had on a white striped top and skirt number that would lend itself to what I had planned for her so well.
“So I was found guilty and I’m supposed to pay five thousand and pay court fees. So what’s the chance of getting seven thousand of my trust fund?’
“Depends on what you’re willing to do to convince me that you deserve that money?”
“Really Graham, it’s to come from my inheritance not from you personally!”
“Need I remind you that’s an inheritance that you only get when you turn twenty-five and since you’re only twenty-three, then it’s my discretion if you get the money or not!”
“Jesus, Graham, what do you want me to do to get the money?”
