Last King of Tago

Do you fight for your kingdom or leave it behind?

Chapter 1 by MausAss MausAss

You could see the castle slowly burning to the ground, the home of your family for the last 1000 years. Your father the king must be dead by now, punished by his greed. You barely escaped the onslaught together with your two of your sisters. If it hadn't been for your mother the queen you would have perished too. All your brothers fought in the battle, while you the youngest had to stay back protecting the women. Everyone knew that you had no chance, but still you had wanted to fight. Your dying mother's last wish is the reason you escaped together with your sisters.

The kingdom has fallen, your family is almost extinct. All you got is title and what you could bring with you from the escape.

"You're the king now John Doe," your older sister Antigone says.

"King of what!? Our homeland is taken, I am king of nothing, I got no army, no land and all my family is dead except for you." Its sound harsher than you meant it too, but she seems to understand.

You look at your sisters:

Antigone got blue eyes, pale skin and long wavy red hair. She got the northern look of your family. She's 22 and should've married a long time ago, but your mad father refused. She's very beautiful and could've easily brought you an important ally, but it's too late now. What ally could a princess without a kingdom bring? Still she looks royal; she's tall with a slim figure. She's wearing a blue silk dress, with a generous cleavage showing her ample bosom. She really is beautiful, you try to shake away your indecent thoughts but deep down you know that you've always lusted after her. She's fierce and loyal and has always managed to take care of herself; she's even skilled with a bow.

Ismene is more delicate, a noble woman through and through. She's spoiled, she's never done any hard work and you're not even sure if she could saddle a horse by herself and she loves to ride. Her long beautiful blond hair looks perfect even now. She got the biggest blue eyes and she's absolutely adorable, always making people around her follow her wishes. It’s incredibly hard to say no to her and her look makesyou want to protect her against all evil. She's not as tall as her sister, but still taller than most commoner. She's slender than her sister and with and a more moderate sized chest. She's 18 now, old enough to be married. It's going to be harder for Ismene to adjust than it will be for Antigone.

You want to wrap Ismene up in your arms and tell her that everything will be ok. You want to do more than that to her, but she is your sister.

You are 20 and well trained in the arts of war, but also in the governing of a kingdom. You got three older...no, you had three older brothers. Being 4th in line to the throne gave you a lot more freedom than your older brothers had, especially your oldest brother the heir. You studied under Master James, like all your siblings but you weren't as involved in the governing of the kingdom. Instead you spent time practicing with swords and chasing after wrenches and any other girls you could get your hands on, including the occasional visit to the brothel.

You've got in a couple of fights for sleeping with the wrong girl, most commoner are no match for a well trained warrior, but it has made you aware of some of the more dirty tricks you can't learn on the training ground. You also got your family's red wavy hair, yours is of medium length. You're strong but got a quite a slim figure which often make people underestimate your strength. A part of you want to turn back a fight the intruders, but one man can't fight an army no matter how skilled he is with the sword and it would also leave your sisters defenseless.

You got four horses one for each of you and one spare; they are fully stuffed with supplies. You didn't think of it before but someone, probably your mother must've prepared all this beforehand. The horses were at the exit of the secret tunnel your mother made you escape through, prepared and fully packed. All you had brought was your armor, shield and sword and your protective charm around your neck. Antigone and Ismene had both brought packages with them, while you guarded the rear with your sword drawn.

"You are still king brother and as king of Tago you deserve a blade worthy of that title" Antigone says with authority, spurring you on and gives you the package she's been carrying the whole way. It can't be you think, but a part of you still hope. You slowly unwrap the package and reveal what's inside.

"The Witchblade of Tago!" Antigone says with authority.

All you can do is to stare at it; it really is the Witchblade of Tago. It has been in your family's ownership longer than you've been kings, when and how you family came into possession are all long forgotten. It's worth a fortune; there can't be more than 50 witchblades in the entire world. It looks like it made of steel, but if you look closer you can tell that it’s made of something different, it’s always sharp and it's told that it can withstand any evil.

"Pick it up John," Ismene looks at you with those eyes. You immediately do as she says picking up the mighty blade. It both feels lighter and heavier than any blade you used. It's sharper than any normal sword and if you use enough it can cut through any steel armor. It is a blade worthy of any king in the world. It is also worth more than any other blade in the world. You quickly put it back and wrap it in the fabric again. You do not want anyone to see the blade, not yet.

"It's to dangerous to show it," you explain to Ismene, as she gave you a questioning look.

"A lot of people would kill for a blade like this," Antigone fills in.

"We got enough food for at least a week and enough gold to last a year and enough clothes to handle any weather," Antigone says. “Mother wanted us to go too her brother Rosario in Vismyre, we could start a new life there," Antigone countinues.

You've met Rosario two times and he seems like a nice man, but weak. Going there would lead to a comfortable life. Rosario got two daughters and no sons; he might even make you his heir if you marry one of your cousins which could give you a platform to win back your kingdom from. Still he's only a duke and wouldn't be able to muster enough forces to even threaten them. You would need the support of the whole kingdom for that. Your doubt your uncle has enough influence with the king for that to happen though.

You've seen how peoples opinion of your father has changed while you grew up, he was loved when you were 10. That was when he started going mad and at the end he was hated. You still can't believe that he killed the princess of Aruba, calling her a witch. It's what started this war and without the support of the people it couldn't be won. Maybe you could stay in kingdom trying to muster up support for a rebellion and bring you back to the throne. It would be a very risky project that could easily get you and your sisters killed. The Arubians has never been popular in Tago, so it might be possible to throw them out.

Or you could go north to the wildlands or settle in a town setting up a shop or something or leave the continent completely. You got enough money to buy a small ship. Nothing is forcing you to try to take back your kingdom except honor. Your sisters look at you for guidance; after all you are their king. You need to protect them too and they would be safe with your uncle. You could go to the nearest town to hire some guards to escort them if you don't want to bring them yourself.

You take a last look at the burning castle, realizing that you need to start moving. They will be on the lookout for you and staying here is a surefire way to get caught.

Where do you go?
