Just like Sisters

Careful what you wish for

Chapter 1 by Jeri Cole Jeri Cole

John was 19 and was jealous of the special treatment his 18 year old sister Della got. Sure, she was pretty, but not the brightest. She had been held back more than once in school, hence the fact that she was only now starting her junior year at high school. In fact, their parents had to move to another school district in order to enroll Della in this special school.

John brought his attention back to the computer screen in front of him. Sure, he barely graduated high school himself, but that shouldn’t make it THAT hard to find a decent job.

His parents were constantly on him to improve himself, find a job and get on with his life. They argued over this hours on end. Taking a break from the screen, he decided to head down stairs to get something to drink from the kitchen. Sure, he just could have had the auto system of the house get it for him, but he wanted to stretch his legs.

As he arrived in the kitchen he heard his sister saying, “But it’s not fair!!”

“I’m sorry,” their father said, “But it’s an emergency and we have to leave tonight.” He took his daughter’s head in his hands and kissed her on her head. “Don’t worry, I’ve set the system for you. You don’t need to do anything.”

He then turned to John. “I’m sorry but your great grandmother has passed away, and your mother and I need to fly to London tonight. There is probably going to be a huge fight over her estate, so we may be there for some time. “

He pulled John to the side. “I’ve set the auto system so you don’t need to do anything. I’ve listed you has an adult and your sister has a minor. This way you can concentrate on finding a job and not worry about babysitting your sister.”

And that moment, John’s mother came into the kitchen. “Looks like we’re ready. We need to leave now if we are going to make our flight dear.”
