Invasion

It came in the middle of the night. For hours a storm had raged in the skies above; lightning arced downwards, and thunder rolled over the town of Red Springs. Most citizens had retreated indoors by the time the winds picked up, and were pretty glad they did. Weather reports placed them at up to 40 miles per hour at the height of the storm. It even looked, at one point or another, like hail might begin to tumble down. However, the nature of the world is not the focus of this tale. No, what came next is.

There was another bright flash as a bolt crashed downwards into the earth. Riding on its tail was a flaming shape, not unlike a meteor. However, its flames were dim enough that it went relatively unnoticed in the sky- those who did see it, tended to assume a plane or helicopter was soaring above...and had a rather insane pilot. Nevertheless, the shape slammed hard into the earth, landing in the backyard of some backwoods home. The boom that followed was more than enough to shake the fence, the trees, and even the young girl's home. The flames stretched upward for a moment, only to be beaten down by the heavy rains. At the least, no one would have to worry about a fire being sparked.

However, the metal object began to quake, until finally large chunks of it unhinged, and the whole thing broke apart. There was a pause, darkness engulfing, and then something else began to stir. It stirred from the ashes of its former home- a slimey creature whose very skin reflected the world around it. It was fair sized, and somewhat resembled a slug or...simply, a blob would be more like it. It slithered forward into the tall grass, shifting about as it looked for something...anything. The rain, however, blocked its sense of smell, and its present location meant it had little in the way of sight range.

Another spark of lightning cued the chorus of thunder, and the creature was illuminated for an instant. What fell demon had descended upon the streets of the town?
