Hiding in plain sight

A Goth, an idol and a change

Chapter 1 by Rei_Bani1 Rei_Bani1

"One more street, and I've made it", Alex whispered, waiting for the coast to clear. In the distance, uniformed officers combed the streets with flashlights, and the flashing red and blue colors permeated the surroundings, growing ever closer.

Alex neared his destination—an apartment complex harboring an empty room for him to lay low. The cause of his current predicament resided in a plain brown paper bag, giving off the impression that he was casually strolling with it.

As long as no one with an itch for their throat and sticky hands gets in my way, I should make it in time, Alex speculated as he waited to cross the street.

Peering out from behind a parked, uncleaned yellow taxi, Alex seized his chance, darting across the bustling street, skillfully dodging cars to reach the other side. Entering the apartment complex, he ascended the stairs, bypassing the escalator and potential awkward conversations that might ensue.

Upon reaching the fourth floor, Alex walks over to the fifth door while checking his pockets for the key. He pulls out the key from his left pocket and turns the lock. As he does, he stops and sees a woman walking from the direction of the elevator to the apartment across from him at the sixth. She was blonde with her hair in a ponytail going down to her lower back, her face looked tired, and her waitress black and white outfit appeared worn. The woman spoke, "Excuse me, I think this won't be a pleasant experience tonight." Her voice was soft and nervous. "Thank you, miss. I hope they give us no trouble," Alex replied with a slight smile.

Looking towards the stairs, Alex could hear faint yells of officers of the law.

"You and your partner will probably be at best annoyed by them. They did a sweep a month ago for someone who trashed an art gallery. Expect them to check a floor every hour," the woman sighed while talking, turning her key and entering her place.

Her figure is nice from the back. Maybe in the afternoon, she won't be so down. But wait, do the cops know the room, or is it routine? Wait... My partner?! Alex thought before the door swings open, not of his choice, revealing a surprised goth standing at the entrance.
