Your life in the not to distant future

Chapter 1 by DungeonDaphne DungeonDaphne

It's been years since the fall of society began, starting with the crash of the dollar and ending with the inevitable collapse of governance. Wars broke out across the sphere until near total destruction had occurred. Those lucky - or unlucky- enough to have survived formed small communities and factions where they struggled to persist and thrive. The rest of those who remained lived a nomadic life, roaming across the country, constantly in search of something better. You are one of these unfortunate souls, always hoping for something better but doomed never to find it. It's by no means an easy or desirable life, however, it's far better than being under someone else's control. You've already seen how that ends, how it always ends when you settle somewhere for too long. People are always looking to use those around them for their own gain, and when you have little left but your looks, it's no secret what they lust after. You're not entirely sure how you've managed to survive this long without aid and with your dignity relatively intact. A few close calls had gotten further than you would have preferred but ultimately ended with your fast retreat.

As the months continue to progress, you worry about your luck running out. It's been far too long since you last ran into any settlements or fellow wanders, though you're not sure which would be worse. Settlements meant more people to contend with, making it quite difficult to escape their clasps once spotted. Individuals, however, were prone to being far more and reckless. With most comforts in life lost in the ruins of the destroyed towns and cities, worldly comforts were hard to come by. Meaning when someone saw an opportunity for it, they often tried seizing it with unyielding vigor. Though it was a stressful life, feeling as though you're constantly on the run, you try to make the best of the situation. While many say it would have been better to die before life came to this, you still hold some value to your survival. It was this drive that kept you trudging along a faded, slightly overgrown path. It's extremely hot and muggy, making every article of sweat drenched clothes cling to your body. You have no idea where you currently are nor where you're heading. You just happened to stumble across the path as you were cutting across a light swatch of woods. The dense foliage promises to provide shelter and protection from prying eyes. Typically, you would avoid any paths or roads, however, this one appears to have gone unused for quite some time. You resolve there is no harm in following it for a bit before splintering off.

You're thankful for the light shade and relative relief it provides from the sun. This time of year you should be traveling by night, however, a few recent storms have thrown off your sleep schedule. Being out during the day has its shares of pros and cons. Though the heat from the sun and risk of being seen are worrisome, it couldn't compare with the ease of sight it lended. One couldn't risk using too bright of a light when traveling after dark otherwise they would be easily spotted. Being this hidden and clothes in muted colors of green and brown, you're not terribly concerned. As long as you keep your wits about you and remain silent you should be able to survive another day. This sense of calm progresses until you've been walking for a good hour and the sun has begun its slow descent in the sky. The feeling of being watched is unmistakable and unfortunately all too familiar. Deciding you've spent too much time out in the relative open, you wait until you've passed a bend before quietly slipping into the forest. Not daring to look back, you continue forward as quickly as you can manage without making sound. The hairs on the back of your neck are still prickled, feeling now as if several pairs of eyes are upon you. You suddenly stop short, realizing this is what they intended to happen. They were herding you deeper into the woods, where they could easily overtake you. Hesitantly glancing over your shoulder, you think you catch the sliver of a figure ducking behind a tree.

It's obvious you have but one if there's any hope of survival. Without hesitation, you spring forward. The sound of your feet slamming into the dense forest floor is slightly muted, however, every step forward is threatened by each overgrown root, fallen tree branch, and piles of slippery leaves. You don't hear any chase behind you but are far from reassured. This must be part of their plan, to continue leading you forward. Veering to the side, you began running east now, back in the direction you had come from. You're not certain you'll be able to run out run them should they give chase, however, you must try. Thick, humid air fills your lungs as you take in a deep breath. Still no sounds are heard behind you, could it be the people meant no harm? Just as you're beginning to contemplate slowing down all of a sudden the world gives out from beneath you. The sky pulls away and becomes small as the area around you becomes dark and blurry. A sharp gasp is heard as your back and head connect with something hard, knocking the wind out of you. Still gasping and groaning, you roll onto your side as leaves, branches, and clumps of grass fall all around you.

Everything is hazy and you feel completely disoriented as your eyes begin refocusing to the new light. Small shafts of the sky still peek out from above but are partially obscured by large, protruding roots and hard clumps of dirt. You can feel moisture forming in the corners of your eyes with each painful inhale. Your ribs are bruised if not fractured, though likely not broken. A knot is already beginning to form on the back of your head where it connected with the solid layer of parent rock. It doesn't take long for it to register that you've fallen into some type of pit, a man made one from the looks of it. It's almost comical to think you've fallen for such a rudimentary and cliche trap, however, here you lay temporarily immobilized. You wonder how many more of these holes were strewn about the area. It's no wonder the unseen foes didn't give chase, there was no need since it was almost inevitable you'd run right into one of the pits. Still, you daren't give them the satisfaction of winning or at the least seeing you . Somewhat unsteadily, you manage to sit up and lean against the side of the pit. Panting heavily, you use one of the exposed roots to help pull yourself to your feet. Looking up you feel a wave of nausea and dizziness as your head begins to pound. It won't be easy getting out, the pit appears to be at least 10 feet deep, nearly twice your height. Taking grasp of the next root in reach, you're about to begin dragging yourself up when the sound of voices above is heard.
