I had always been an avid fan of the retro games genre, but by far my favorite, was a game called endless. This was a record breaking game at its time, because it was an endless dungeon crawler, and literally anything could happen. Since it was all ai generated, I could never run out of new things to do. And not only would the AI be good, but it would adapt the story to better fit the choices I make.

I played this game a lot as a kid, and now, even as an adult, I can’t help but pull it out every few weeks and have a long gaming marathon, seeing as far as I could get before . It usually lasted pretty long.

Tonight however, was a stormy night on my own, I had finally gotten my own place, and decided to settle in with a few games, picking out Endless. That stormy night, I played to my hearts content.

I finally died, and saw it was getting late. Though I thought I could play just one more life before I went to bed, but the moment I hit the start button, I heard a loud crash, as a lighting bolt struck into the roof of my house, sending a shockwave throughout.

My television shook, going a bit glitchy and static, before it began to make odd noises, reaching forward to investigate, I felt something. A , pulling me to the screen, the closer I got, the stronger it was, until it suddenly sucked me in!

...

...

...

I awoke with a shudder, the cold wind hitting my back, laying on a patch of thick bushy grass. My eyes flutter slowly open as I gaze about my surroundings. I lay before the entrance to a large cave, and, standing up, I get a good look around.

Seeing the distinct flowers, trees, and warning signs, I immediately recognized the area. This was the starting menu of Endless. Although, I distinctly notice how real everything looks. In fact, as I say that, a small pop up menu appears before me, as if I was about to start the game. Only one thing was different. There were usually three buttons, one the start, one for settings and customization, and one to exit the game. Where once there was an exit button, there was now a glitchy grey block, void of any text, and giving off the sound of static.

This was the main menu for Endless. The yawning cave entrance, the overgrown trees and flowers and ambiance... But it's all... Real? This is... definitely a very involved dream. I go to pinch myself, just to make sure, because it never hurts to try, only for what can only be Endless' popup menu to appear before me! I jump, "Eep!"ing a little in surprise, staring at the thing. What's that static noise all of a sudden? Oh, the... the spot where the exit button is... Okay... Uhm...

I pinch myself. Hard.

"Ow!"

Okay, not a dream, not a dream... Or a very... lucid one... Yeah... What happened before all this? It was storming, I wanted to play Endless, and then... Here I am. "Okay... Great." I say to the menu. "Start. Settings/Customization, and an exit button I definitely cannot press... Surely I- Surely I'm not meant to hit Start!?" Nervously, I reach out and press Settings/Customization, just to interact with the menu without pressing start or the glitching Exit button. Hell, maybe there's a backdoor exit in the settings.

A smaller menu pops out, and, once again, it is an exact replica of the game apart from the excessive detail. There are the standard audio and video settings. But as I go to customizations, underneath is my character profile, and another button, one labeled achievements, showing off the many feats I had managed to complete, though I had never finished the list given that the endless dungeon never gave me all possibilities to get them. Pressing the button, I could see that all of my achievements were empty, now replaced with question marks like when I first bought the game.

It seemed that my entire account had been reset, as I move back to my character profile, I notice that the picture is one of me, and that all the stats were mine, though they seemed to be frozen in place. These stats were specific too, ranging from things like my height and hair color, to my genital size. It was a sight to behold, but it began to help me realize that I was truly stuck. There was no way to exit the game, and I seem to have imprinted myself into the games characters.

Of course, any attempt to leave or at least walk away from the dungeon was futile. The game makers never designed the game to be anywhere but the starting screen or the dungeon, and looking past the familiar scenery, it was clear that the space around it was empty, just pixelated sky beyond the forest. I have nothing left to do, so I press the start button

The menu screen disappears, and I seem to now be free to enter the cave, though from the looks of it, I don’t have any weapons in hand. Though from my time with the game, I remember that I had an inventory, which could be opened only with the controller, but there has to be some way to open it, going into a dungeon unarmed was stupid.

After a bit of looking around, I saw something, a small glimmer on my wrist. Looking down at it, I saw a tiny circular button, not exactly attached to me, but it hovered just above, like a watch. Giving it a press, I was stunned as another menu popped up, this time though, it had numerous slots, your health, mana and other stat bars, and a 3D visual representation of you, next to armor slots. To my dismay, I was left empty handed, apart from my five armor slots, which were all filled apart from the head.

Head: Empty

Torso: Baggy Blue Shirt

Legs: Baggy Blue Pants

Feet: Tattered Tennis Shoes

Undergarments: Plain Grey Boxers

They didn’t have any secondary effects like extra strength or magic like most armor did, but at least I had some protection…

now but to head in…

What is the first thing I encounter?
