Hack into the secrets of the multiverse

Chapter 1 by JohnTitor45 JohnTitor45

Everything is coincidence but even coincidence is part of fate's design. I'm not losing it. I'm perfectly sane. What I speak is the absolute truth, not some childish fantasy. No matter how trivial something may seem, it has the potential to shape the future. Have you heard of the butterfly effect? If not, look it up. Then you'll understand how careful you must be. Actually, if you're reading from a universe where the Sound of Thunder was about time travel, you probably still won't understand. Unfortunately, I didn't understand either. If only I had realised how dangerous my actions were, then I wouldn't have lost her. The future wouldn't have turned out like this but how could I have known? How could I have known that by pressing that button, I would decide the fate of all mankind? Just thinking about it, the average human perceives just one percent of their environment. We're not nearly as clever as we like to think. We go about our lives oblivious to a million different things that happen around us everyday.

Even when something catches our eyes, our brain forgets it a moment later.

I want to tell me back then, "Don't do anything careless! Don't do anything rash! Don't pretend you didn't see that! Pay more attention! The hand of conspiracy was always closer than you thought, just waiting for the right moment to strike!"

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start this story from the beginning.

--

Consider, can the universe be justifiably called infinite? Doubtful, it may not have a discernible end but it had a beginning and it's competent parts definitely have a limited cosmological shelf life before they are by their own power destroyed. Splitting hairs or not, if history tells us anything it's that those who hold wisdom are often the most foolish. The fish in the sea know not the land. If they too hold wisdom, they too will be destroyed. It is more ridiculous for man to exceed light speed than for fish to live ashore.

We're all just a ship of fools chasing phantoms, heedless of what really underwrite natural law. This may also be called God's final warning to those who rebel.

"Hey, what are you mumbling about? Ocy? Earth to Ocy!"

I said all that out loud, didn't I? It was July 28th, Wednesday. There was no sound coming from my phone against my right ear, only silence, as I stood, baking in the summer sun, sweat slowly sliding down my chin. A girl with short red hair, that formed fringes that swept from either side, was standing in front of me, Ashley Forrester. We'd known each other since we were both little. Ashley was 18, same age as me. I'd been looking out for her for as long as I could remember. I used to hope she'd become the key to Dragons Gate but now I've reconsidered. I didn't want that fate for her, she should live a normal life. That was my present wish. Ashley gave me an inquisitive tilt with her head.

"Yeah, yeah." I said as I began to exit the rooftop of our apartment building.
