Caitlyn and Vi: Piltover's Finest

A game of Cocks and Rubbers across Runeterra.

Chapter 1 by Krevmh Krevmh

"If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." - Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

The atmosphere in Captain Rohmer's office wasn't ideal. Especially not for a pair of bruised and disheveled Wardens who didn't want to look her in the eye. The Captain was a young-looking woman, almost certainly older than the mid-20s she perpetually appeared to be due to Piltover's anti-aging technology. It didn't stop her from constantly telling her subordinates about the grey hairs and ulcers they were giving her when they didn't perform. Especially when it was a certain pair.

"Why is it always you two in my office being dressed down?" Rohmer asked with a snarl.

"Because you're always calling us to your office to dress us down?" Vi shot back, Cait stomped her toes in response.

"She means to say that we're both incredibly sorry, captain." Caitlyn seethed through clenched teeth as Vi elbowed her back.

"That's not my problem Sherrif, you're always sorry. My problem is that sorry doesn't pay damages, the department does. And the department takes them out of my pay."

"Hey! It's not our fault the fugitive dove behind that fruit cart!" Vi interjected.

"But smashing through it was."

"We got him, didn't we?" Vi shrugged.

"He's in critical condition, if we're lucky, he'll be able to pay his fines. Between you smashing half a block and Cait blasting away at the first sign of trouble, it feels like the department is sticking their club up my ass."

"I had one perp say he'd pay extra for that." Vi snorted, elbowing Cait. Caitlyn did not laugh.

"You're lucky I'm not sticking mine up yours." Rohmer snapped. "You both are on desk duty, effective tomorrow."

"But crime in this city is out of control!" Vi gasped. "You can't take us off the streets!"

"I just did, consider yourselves lucky you still have badges. Get out of my sight, don't think for a second you're getting overtime for this."

"I understand your decision, Captain. I hope we can prove why it was a poor one before anybody gets hurt." Caitlyn sighed. She slipped out of Rohmer's office, Vi joined her shortly after considering calling the Captain something regrettable.

"Cupcake, you're just going to take that?" Vi whispered angrily. They walked down the hallway toward the locker room.

"We're lucky it wasn't worse." Caitlyn scoffed, keeping a brisk pace in the hope of cleaning the smashed fruit off of her sometime soon. Vi flicked a melon rind off of her shoulder.

"I know that, but I've never been on desk duty, I don't even know what a desk looks like! This city needs us on the clock, not pushing pencils."

Cait stopped and turned to her partner. "I guess you wouldn't know since you're still new."

Vi stopped as well "What? Is desk duty code for something?"

"If you're on desk duty, you get a key to the archives."

"So?"

Cait leaned in lower and dropped her shades slightly to look Vi in the eye "So, we get access to every unsolved case file in the system."

Vi look confused for a moment, but then the implications hit her "Every case file?"

Cait nodded.

Vi stepped back and looked around, when she saw they were alone she leaned back in "Including 'that' case file?"

Cait nodded again.

Vi leaned in closer "How often does Captain leave her office?"

Cait pushed her shades back up, knocking a piece of cabbage to the floor. "I hear she has a private bathroom."

Vi gave a belly laugh and continued on to the locker rooms. "You know, I may have been too harsh on desk duty."
