An Unexpected Evening

I put the phone down.

"Well, that's it." I thought to myself. "I'll just have to go through with it."

Kate had called. She and I have been going together for about six months. She's pretty busy at her job, so we haven't moved in together yet. The six months with her have been absolutely great. We don't get to talk a lot, but our sex is about the best I've had.

"You're very different from all the other men I've known" she had once told me.

I had planned on a quiet evening at home that day. Kate's mother was in town for a couple of days and staying with her, so Kate's plan had been to take her mother out in the evening for dinner. Now she had just called to tell me that she had to travel out of town on some sudden urgent work and would not be back till late at night. She might even have to stay overnight if they weren't able to wrap up in time. Would I be a dear and take her mother out for the evening?

I hadn't met her mother, and I didn't know if this was the best way to meet for the first time, but, on the other hand, why make a big deal about it. Kate had said that she would call her mother and tell her to expect me at about seven.
