A World of Sorcery

Welcome to my next jaunt into creative writing. I'd love for other people to write for this, whether that's branching off from this point or from further along in a branch. In another parallel universe, in many ways much like our own, magic is abundant. It's unusual for most people to go longer than a single day without seeing some evidence of magic, whether that's meeting a magical creature, having a spell cast on them by a professional, or seeing a celebrity spellcaster on TV. The power of magic is always present, and in no way is this more obvious than a person's Sorcery.

Ah, yes. Sorcery. Everyone has one. A Sorcery is a personal spell, that belongs to you and only you. Most people don't get their Sorcery analyzed by a professional until they're a legal adult; before the modern time, most people went their whole lives without discovering their Sorcery. And once you know what your Sorcery is, casting it is as simple as following a recipe in the kitchen. Not that using your Sorcery isn't draining; if you're not a professional spellcaster, it can take a lot out of you. Most people can't use their Sorcery more than a few times a day without putting unhealthy strain on their bodies. That said, some particularly dedicated people study their whole lives to develop their spellcasting ability, and either develop their Sorcery into dozens of useful spells, or learn to cast other people's Sorceries. Either specialization requires years of training, analogous to completing a PhD program. These rare few are called Wizards.

But of course, that's not necessarily the life you lead. Most people get by just fine, working 9 to 5, and only occasionally using their Sorcery when it would be useful. Maybe your Sorcery is nothing more than a party trick, like a spell that allows you to teleport small objects into and out of your hands a short distance. Maybe your Sorcery is more grand, such as enchanting the minds of animals to do your bidding. And maybe... just maybe...

Your Sorcery could change the world forever.

But enough of that silly world building nonsense! We don't even know who we're dealing with here!
