Violet Follow Moira
Violet waited only a few seconds before she followed.
The basement door stood slightly ajar. Cool air rose from the stairwell, carrying the old smells of dust, damp concrete, and something fainter that might have been cigarette smoke. She descended carefully. The wooden steps creaked under her weight. Below, a single bare bulb threw yellow light across the cluttered space.
Moira was already there.
She stood near the far wall where the old water heater sat, one hand resting on her hip, the other trailing along a dusty shelf as if she had all the time in the world. When she heard Violet’s footsteps she glanced over her shoulder. The red mouth curved.
“I wondered how long you’d last before curiosity won,” Moira said. “The house does like an eager student.”
Violet reached the bottom of the stairs and stopped. The basement felt heavier than the rest of the house. The air pressed closer here. She could feel the House’s attention focused on this room, concentrated and interested.
Moira turned fully to face her. The tight black uniform hugged every curve. In the low light her skin looked almost luminous. She studied Violet for a long moment, eyes moving from her face down her body and back up again with open appraisal.
“You’re still wearing last night on you,” Moira said quietly. “The way you stand. The way your pulse jumps in your throat when someone mentions the cage. The Pale Man left a mark deeper than bruises.”
She took a step closer. Then another. Violet did not back away.
Moira reached out and brushed two fingers along the side of Violet’s neck, right over the place where her pulse beat hardest. The touch was cool and deliberate.
“I watched some of it from the walls,” Moira continued. “The way you edged him. The way you held him right at the edge and then stopped. You liked the power. Don’t bother denying it. The house already told me.”
Her fingers trailed lower, skimming the collarbone, then dropping away.
“There’s more the house can teach you,” Moira said. “If you want it. Ben isn’t the only one who can be broken down here. And the Pale Man isn’t the only one who knows how to use a body until it forgets its own name.”
The bare bulb above them flickered once.
Somewhere deeper in the basement a soft, wet sound moved through the dark beyond the reach of the light. Not footsteps. Something heavier. Something that dragged.
Moira’s smile widened.
“He’s listening,” she said. “He always listens when the conversation gets interesting.”
Violet’s heart beat hard against her ribs. The House pressed warmer against the back of her mind, encouraging, hungry, already offering images of what could happen next in this low, private space.
Moira tilted her head, waiting.
