New Resident

Chapter 23 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

The afternoon dragged.

Ben had not left the kitchen table for hours. He sat in the same careful posture, thighs slightly apart, spine rigid, staring at nothing. Every so often a small tremor passed through him and he would close his eyes until it passed. The chastity cage remained locked. The House had not seen fit to release him.

Vivien had retreated upstairs. Violet could hear her moving around the master bedroom in restless, aimless patterns. Neither of them had spoken more than a handful of words since breakfast.

Violet was in the living room when the air changed.

It was subtle at first. A shift in temperature. The faint scent of old perfume and cigarette smoke that did not belong to anyone currently breathing in the house. Then a soft footstep on the hardwood behind her.

Young Moira stood in the archway to the hall.

She looked exactly as she always did when the house felt like showing this version of her: dark hair curled and perfect, red lips, the black maid’s uniform cut too tight across the chest and hips. Her eyes moved over Violet with open curiosity, then flicked toward the kitchen where Ben still sat broken in his chair.

“Well,” Moira said. Her voice was low and amused. “Someone’s been busy.”

Violet did not answer. The House stirred faintly in the walls at Moira’s presence, like a host acknowledging another long-term resident.

Moira walked past her into the kitchen. She moved with the easy confidence of someone who had watched decades of ruin unfold in these rooms. When she reached Ben she stopped beside his chair and looked down at him. He flinched hard but did not lift his head.

“Poor doctor,” Moira murmured. She reached out and rested two fingers under his chin, tilting his face up. Ben’s eyes were bloodshot and empty. “You used to look so composed sitting in that therapy chair. Now look at you.”

Her gaze dropped to his lap. Even through the fabric of his trousers the rigid shape of the chastity cage was obvious. Moira’s red mouth curved.

“The house always did have a taste for making the strong ones small.”

She released Ben’s chin and turned to Violet. Something knowing and hungry moved behind her eyes.

“You’ve been letting it in, haven’t you?” Moira said softly. “I can smell it on you. The Pale Man too. He doesn’t come out for just anyone.”

Violet felt the House press lightly against the back of her thoughts, warm and encouraging. A slow pulse of interest moved through her at the sight of Moira standing there in that tight uniform, looking at her father’s broken posture with open satisfaction.

Moira stepped closer to Violet. Close enough that the scent of her perfume cut through the stale air of the kitchen.

“There’s room for more players,” she said. “The house likes variety. And I’ve been bored for a very long time.”

In the chair, Ben made a small, helpless sound.

Moira smiled.
