The Afternoon
A few hours later the house had settled into that heavy afternoon quiet. Sunlight cut through the tall windows in long dusty bars. Ben had left for the clinic. The only sounds were the occasional creak of old wood and the soft tick of the kitchen clock downstairs.
Violet was upstairs in her room with the door half open. She had changed into a thin sleeveless dress that clung when she moved. No bra. No underwear. The fabric whispered against her skin every time she shifted on the bed. She was supposed to be reading. The book lay open and forgotten across her thighs.
She could hear her mother moving around the house. Soft footsteps in the hallway. The muted sound of drawers opening and closing in the master bedroom. Then quiet again.
Violet’s hand drifted down almost without permission. She pressed her palm between her legs over the dress and felt how warm she already was. The memory of the kitchen that morning sat sharp in her mind. The way Vivien had looked at her. The way the air had changed for those few seconds before Ben came back.
She rubbed slowly through the fabric. Circles. Pressure. Just enough to make her breath catch.
Down the hall a door opened. Footsteps approached. Violet did not stop. She kept her hand where it was and watched the doorway.
Vivien appeared, still in the same pale robe, hair loose now. She paused when she saw Violet on the bed. Her eyes flicked to the hand between Violet’s thighs and stayed there for a beat too long.
“I was going to ask if you wanted lunch,” Vivien said. Her voice was steadier than her eyes.
Violet’s fingers kept moving under the dress. Slow. Deliberate. She did not bother hiding it.
“I’m not hungry for food.”
Silence stretched. The house seemed to lean in. Vivien’s throat worked as she swallowed. She took one step into the room. Then another. The robe had slipped off one shoulder again. The soft curve of her breast showed at the edge of the fabric.
Violet’s pulse hammered between her legs. She spread her knees a little wider. The dress rode up. Cool air touched the wet heat of her cunt.
Vivien’s gaze dropped. Darkened. She stopped at the foot of the bed and rested one hand on the bedpost like she needed the support.
“Violet.” Just her name. Quiet. Warning and invitation at the same time.
Violet met her mother’s eyes and did not look away. Her fingers slipped under the hem of the dress and found slick skin. She let out a soft breath as she touched herself properly this time.
“Stay,” she said.
Vivien’s fingers tightened on the bedpost. For a long second it looked like she might turn and leave. Then she stepped closer instead, close enough that Violet could smell her skin and the faint trace of the morning’s coffee on her breath.
The Murder House held its breath with them.
