The Conundrum's Resolution

"One of us is going to have to retire." Carmelita said after a moment.

"I agree. I don't just want to marry you. I want to start a family." Harriet reached out to brush the back of her fingers on Carmelita's face.

"I want at least three." Carmelita said

"I'd be happy to give them to you. Or… we both carry them. I know we both have the leave." Harriet replied.

"We need to think of where they'll be raised first." Carmelita said, "I don't want to leave the Colonies. I know you feel the same about the Federation but…"

"Are we really going to come this far just to fail at the finish line?" Harriet asked. "I think either of us could learn to love our new home…"

The door opened, before the rings they would have jumped apart, but now they turned as one.

"You know, we've been thinking." Jennifer said, walking in as if that thinking hadn't taken place very rapidly in the last thirty seconds, Harriet's second in command, Anna Muller, one step behind her. The Generals quickly realizing that the empty room had been no accident. "We have a suggestion for you on how this can be resolved."

"You!" Harriet pointed at Anna accusingly but it was clear the gesture was meant for them both. "Did you seriously arrange this entire thing because you knew we wouldn't be able to agree?"

"You have to admit it was easy to see this problem coming." Anna lied smoothly, her expression giving nothing away.

"It's not like we expected that neither of you would want to leave home. That would have been crazy for us to overlook. Neither of us would be that forgetful." Jennifer chimed in. Carmelita looked at her second in command, it was exactly this kind of thinking that made her know that she was ready for her own star. Once this was done, one way, or the other, she was going to put in for Jennifer's promotion.

"A battle between the company's then." Carmelita said with certainty, "Just as planned but with a prize much bigger than bragging rights."

"The most important battle of our lives." Harriet agreed, "It's only fitting. I guess we needed to have at least one that was decisive."

"I take it the two of you made your own wager on this. What was it?" Carmelita said, there was no way that two ambitious women like that could spend all that time planning something as elaborate as this together without deciding to put some skin in the game. Especially knowing Jennifer.

"In any case now that our plan has come to fruition we do need to handle a few things. If you'll excuse us." Anna said, grabbing Jennifer's arm and dragging her out of the room.

"And we thought we were being under the radar." Harriet said with wonder.

"I wonder how long its been going on between them." Carmelita agreed.
