Chapter 28 by HistoricoPublius HistoricoPublius

That afternoon...

...the party stumbles upon some goblins!

Fate Roll: Do they find the ruins? (Very Unlikely, CF 5) 1d100=61 - no!
Fate Roll: Do they encounter something hostile? (50/50, CF 5) 1d100=42 - yes!
Fate Roll: Is it goblins? (Likely, CF 5) 1d100=36 - yes!
Fate Roll: Is it a Severe-threat encounter? (Unlikely, CF 5) 1d100=91 - **** no, it's just a few goblins

They march through the woods, sunlight dappling through the leaves to light their path as they go. Late that afternoon, Turuk takes off to scout the area ahead by air. A few minutes later, he returns, landing heavily in their path.

"Goblins ahead," he growls. "Just a small band - half a dozen or so. They seem to be arguing amongst themselves."

Gilia's grip tightens on her crossbow. Goblins! The little green fiends! She's heard tales of them living in the woods, but she's never actually encountered one. They used to raid the village occasionally, she knows...when they were stronger, before she was born. She nervously checks to make sure that she has a bolt properly loaded in the crossbow, and Bodill jerks it roughly down to prevent her from peering at it point-blank.

"Right then," Hal says when Turuk's described the lay of the land to them. "No need for this to be a drawn out affair...we'll sneak up on them, take them by surprise, and have it done fast. Turuk, you'll come in over top of them from the south; I'll sneak in on foot from that direction and be the first one they see coming out. Bodill, you cover the east; Gilia, take the west. Jamir, you stay behind me so that I can cover you."

"W-What do I do?" Gilia asks nervously. Hal chuckles.

"Mostly, just make sure none of them escape," he says. "Use that thing if you have to." He points to her crossbow. "But I expect you should be able to mostly stay out of the thick of things - sounds like a small group."

Everyone else is nodding, so Gilia takes a deep breath and does so as well. I can do it. I'm an adventurer!

Twenty minutes later, sweat pours down her back as she creeps through the undergrowth, bent double. She can hear the goblins now - their nasal, high-pitched voices arguing about something in their own language off to her right. She creeps toward the edge of the clearing they're in, trying to get a better view...

Does she manage to approach without being noticed?
