The past few hours were the craziest moments in the girls’ lives they ever experienced as they drove back to Chloe’s house.

As soon as they arrived, Joyce was waiting at the door. At first she was mad, but then her eyes laid on Rachel Amber, and her anger dropped. Tears formed in her eyes as she rushed over and hugged the girl tightly. “Oh my sweet baby girls,” Joyce cried as she held both Rachel and Chloe tightly. “Rachel, we’ve missed you so much. Where have you been?”

“Mom, please. We can explain later, but right now it’s urgent we talk to David,” Chloe said. “Someone’s life is at stake.”

Joyce nodded. “Okay. I trust you. Oh and good to see you too, Max. David is in the garage working on a new car.

Joyce hugged Max tightly and then let the girls be on their way as they rushed to the garage and when they entered, Chloe stopped in her tracks to see the car that David was fixing up. She knew it anywhere. It was her dad’s. The same one he was driving.... the day of the crash.

“David...” Chloe said. “W-we need to talk.”

“Chloe?” David said. “I think I should speak first. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have just barged in your room like that. And I’m sorry for pressuring you into this whole thing in the first place. I... I hope it’s alright I’m trying to fix this up. I found it and I thought I’d surprise you if I could get it working. I’m sorry if I overstepped.”

“No, it’s... thank you, David,” Chloe said. “But we’re not here to discuss that. This is serious. Someone’s life is at risk. Rachel here can explain.”

David nodded and sat down on a chair. “Okay. What is it?”

Rachel explained everything she told Chloe and Max about the abduction and everything. “And now he’s targeting Victoria Chase.”

David nodded. “I knew that son of a bitch was up to something. I tried talking to Kate about it, but she didn’t have anything. I appreciate you telling me all this. I have a few ideas of where the bastard is at. But if you don’t mind, Rachel. I’d like to ask you some questions so I can get the full idea.”

Rachel nodded. “Okay.”

“Did you notice anything at all. Any smells, any sounds you may have heard?”

“I did hear some birds and maybe an owl. It also kind of smelled... like hay or something. It actually kind of smelled like a barn. You know like one that would have animals like cows or horses,” Rachel said. “But it was hard to hear in the room I was in. I think we were underground.”

“Please don’t go to the cops about this,” Chloe said. “We have no evidence about any of this.”

“Actually we can go to the police,” David said. “But we can do this discretely. I’ll talk in person with a good buddy and get a search warrant. We have probable cause and if we act quickly Mark won’t have time to respond. I won’t blow this up, but I will most likely need backup. I think I have confirmed the location of where this room is.”

David opened one of the lockers and pulled out a cork board with papers and everything. “From my evidence the location has to be in the Prescott Barn especially from what you’ve told me. I can inform a few people at the station keep it in under wraps, and then go alone to confirm. I’ll then put out a signal just in case something goes wrong and then we’ll nail him.”

“I guess that makes sense,” Chloe said.

“You girls wait here. I don’t want you going to school either. You are to stay here until I tell you otherwise or... until another officer comes and tells you the cost is clear,” David said.

Chloe, Rachel, and Max all nodded as David stood up. “Stay alive for me,” Chloe said as she stood up with him.

“Chloe, if anything happens... I want you to know that I care a lot about you. More than you know.”

Chloe nodded. “And I guess I don’t completely hate you either,” she said. “And thank you, for trying to fix my dad’s car.”

David nodded and left the house. The girls went up to Chloe’s room and laid down on her bed.

“So,” Rachel said. “This is the first time we get to actually hangout, Max.”

“Yeah,” Max said. “So what should we do? I don’t think we should mess with time while David does his thing, but maybe we can do something else.”
