Randall had got even better about cleaning up around the house and was a half-decent cook by this point, so a reasonable amount of his day was spent at home. But he was getting in the habit of getting up with you now - 'to get a start on his day,' he explained, usually saying that had to get stuff done around house so he could meet 'the girls' or run some errands. And he was spending more time getting ready, carefully applying makeup and jewelry, and choosing your mom's clothes - no longer just throwing on a sweatshirt, but actually bothering to dress with some style. You were very surprised when you got home one afternoon to find him with Laura (another of your mom's friends) discussing a fundraiser for a community charity that your mom had volunteered for in the past. You wondered if they had been to a meeting or some event - but then again, Randall had been dressing up more when he went out, so perhaps this was becoming the norm. You were curious but couldn't say very much with Laura there.

Randall explained after Laura had left. "It's been fun hanging with Rebecca, Laura, Dawn, and the other girls, but I needed to find something else to do. So when Laura starting talking to me about the charity work and asking me if I was going to help out 'again' this year, I said sure."

You looked puzzled so he continued. "I never thought I'd say this but I actually miss school. Not all the crap we put up with from teachers and stuff, but just having something to do everyday. I figured your mom probably got bored too. She found things to occupy her time, so I thought I'd give it a try."

He gave you an uncharacteristic grin (for your mother). "Besides, it gives me an excuse to spend more time with Laura and Amanda. They're pretty cool for older chicks!"

You rolled your eyes at him. THAT sounded more like a typical Randall comment. You had started to wonder you were losing the 'old' Randall. "It's not just that, dude. I kinda understand you needing to get and do stuff, though I didn't figure charity work was your style. It...it's all this!" you said, waving your hand at his body. "The clothes ... the makeup and jewlery. All that stuff!"

He actually blushed and looked embarrassed - an expression that seemed more your mom's than Randall's. He started to speak, stopped, started again, stopped, then stood there a moment in silence. Finally he just shrugged. "I don't know," he said. "I just...well, I got tired of Rebecca or Laura or the others constantly asking what was wrong, why I was acting so funny. You know? I guess I was getting kind of self-conscious, and I wanted to just fit in with the other women. So it's easier just to dress and act like them."

"Peer pressure?" you asked. "Really?"

He glared at you. "Not exactly...but sort of. I mean, even you pointed out my 'inappropriate' behavior. I've got enough stuff to deal with, getting used to this life. I don't need that sort of negative attention and questioning."

He paused and looked more thoughtful. "Besides, it's taken awhile but I guess I've accepted that 'this' is me, my body now. And you know what? I'm hot!"

You winced, feeling uncomfortable at the direction he was going.

He continued, going on a roll. "In a way it's a matter of pride. I want to look good. I like the way it feels....I like the attention."
