heading out to sea

Chapter 202 by zankoo zankoo

Ashley gripped the helm of The Golden Rule, guiding the vessel smoothly through the sparkling blue waters as it pulled away from the marina. The rest of the group settled into the plush seats on the deck, soaking in the warm sun and salty sea breeze.

Staci stood up, her dark skin glowing in the bright light. "Alright everyone, just a few things before we really get this party started!" She grinned mischievously. "There are plenty of drinks and snacks below deck, so help yourselves. Life jackets are in that compartment there if anyone needs one." She gestured to a sleek cabinet built into the side of the boat.

"I'm hoping we can drop anchor a few miles out and maybe go for a dip later, if people are up for it," Staci continued, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "Oh, and one more thing!" She opened up a large cardboard box, pulling out a stack of crisp white t-shirts. "A little gift from Phil and I to commemorate the occasion."

She held one up, showing off the simple boat logo on the front with "The Golden Rule" printed beneath it in an elegant script font. On the back, bold lettering proclaimed "Set Sail with Staci and Phil" followed by today's date.

"Ooh, I love it!" Alicia exclaimed, hopping up to grab two shirts - one for her and one for Ashley. "You two are the cutest."

The group broke into smaller clusters, chatting and laughing as Staci passed out the souvenir t-shirts. Alicia joined her twin sister Ashley at the helm, playfully modeling her new shirt. Jake and Abbie claimed a pair of lounge chairs near the bow, leaning close together as they admired the stunning ocean vistas.

Phil sat down with Arthur and Emily. He brought over a bucket of ice with a few bottles of beer in it, taking one for himself and cracking it open. Arthur pulled one more out and extended it toward Emily with a questioning glance.

"Want to share one?" Emily said gently.

Arthur grinned. "Sure." He opened the bottle, and handed it over to Emily for the first sip. He watched her put the bottle to her lips, and was a little surprised to feel a slight shiver run through his body. Emily didn't notice, but Phil did, and smirked at his friend. Arthur shrugged and raised his eyebrows before turning back to Emily, who handed him the bottle.

Phil held up his drink. "To good friends and a beautiful day at sea," he toasted, clinking his bottle against theirs.

Meanwhile, at the stern, Rick, Taylor, Melanie and Danny formed a lively foursome, teasing and joking with the energy of familiar old friends, despite not all knowing each other particularly well. Danny fiddled with the sound system, queuing up a sensual, soulful playlist to set the perfect mood.

Staci busied herself with laying out the impressive spread of food -- colorful fruits, artisanal cheeses, an assortment of cured meats. The tantalizing aromas mingled with the salty sea air, making everyone's mouth water in anticipation.

As the yacht cruised further from shore, the land faded into the distance, leaving only endless blue horizons in every direction. A sense of delicious freedom and possibility seemed to flow through the group, aided by the free-flowing alcohol and the sultry beat of the music.

Abbie felt her pulse quicken as Jake's fingertips grazed her thigh. But before she could even react or respond, Staci appeared in front of them, offering a tray of snacks.

"Hungry?"

Jake chuckled. "Actually, yes. I think everything back at the brunch was amazing -- but I'm not sure I even ate that much."

"You missed out," Staci commented. "If nothing else, my family is known for overfeeding. Honestly, I don't understand how I'm thin, with the amount of food my parents have provided over the years." She glanced at Abbie. "I run a lot -- it's kind of an obsession. Keeps the metabolism cooking."

Abbie giggled. "I'm envious. I mean, of the desire to exercise that much. I wish I had that drive!"

"You don't work out?" Staci asked. "I'm kind of shocked. You look like you're in great shape."

Abbie kicked one leg out playfully, showing off. "Maybe once in a while, but nothing like a commitment to running."

"Well, you look great." Staci turned to look up and down the boat, noticing that Melanie and Taylor had just re-emerged from below deck in swimsuits. "It looks like a few of the girls might lay out in the sun. It's such a gorgeous day! I'm so glad you both came along."

Jake finished collecting a few tidbits of cheese and meat from the tray, gathering them onto a small plate. "Thanks for including us! This is an amazing and luxurious escape from the extremely common and bland life I normally live."

Staci laughed. "Well, you'll just have to spend more time with the Reynolds side of the family tree, won't you?" She winked at Abbie, and slowly strutted toward her other friends.

Silence filled the air as Jake and Abbie watched everyone around them talking, drinking, moving to the music, stretching in the sun.

"It really is the epitome of elegance, isn't it?" Abbie said.

"Yeah," Jake agreed.

"I feel a little overwhelmed!"

Jake looked at her. "You? I didn't think anything overwhelmed you."

Abbie took a breath. "Yeah, me too! But ... I mean, it's all good, of course. It's just ... I know that this isn't what I know, it isn't what I've lived. So it's just so new!"

"I guess we gotta make the most of it while we can, right?" Jake said.

Abbie nodded. "Would it bother you if I went up there and joined some of the other girls in the sun?"

Jake laughed. "Of course you should do that."

"You won't feel abandoned?"

"I'll be fine."

Abbie smiled and patted Jake on the leg as she stood up. "Of course you will. Go talk to the boys. Make some friends."

Jake chuckled and finished his cheese. "I'll go grab a beer first. Have fun up there."

"I'm sure I'll find a way."
