deflect the blast

Thinking quickly, you see a large silver platter in a pile of trinkets on the ground. you raise it in front of yourself just as the wand lets out a bolt of pink energy. The bolt hits the platter and returns right back to where it came from. The bolt hits the wand that fired it and the item explodes into crackling pink light. The goblin chief looks at his now singed hand in shock. He turns his attention back to you, but it's too late. You already closed the distance and stab your knife into the chiefs heart, killing him. The goblins spectating through the portcullis shrink back at the sight of their dead leader and begin to flee away from the hut. You can feel a surge of power flow through your body as your inventory opens automatically.

Of course you shouldn't have hoped for any combat skills, but this was ridiculous. You look around the room for anything worth taking, but find nothing but pillaged silverware, more platters, and some silver goblets. However once you check the sack that the chief pulled the wand out of, you find a small wooden shield. Once put on it only reaches about halfway up your forearm, but it's better than no protection at all. You also discover a door behind the chief's wooden throne, and continue through it.
