bandits on the road
I walked through the first day and night, and on the second day on the road, I heard the cries of people in trouble. I quickened my pace and saw that a wagon was being robbed. There was a man laying on the road, with blood coming from him while five other men tormented a woman and ransacked what appeared to be their belongings.
Without a word, I slipped off a spear from my back and threw it at one of the men with what looked like a crossbow. The spear exploded out the back of the man and stuck in a tree on the other side of him. Before the men had time to notice one of them was dead, I was on them. My sword cleaved one man in half, and another diagonally, before the last two had figured out what was going on. I assumed the one with the most experience was the one that attempted to stab me with his puny blade. I simply grabbed his arm and broke it, then flung him behind me, some 10ft in the air. The last one it seemed had succumbed to the transhuman fear of a seven-foot marine murdering his friends. He simply stared at me, then voided his bowels while shaking. I quickly checked to see that the woman was not in danger of wild flailing and then simply walked up to the last man and with a simple flick of my wrist, snapped his neck like a child would snap a dried twig.
"Are you alright?" I asked the attacked woman, as she lay on the packed dirt of the road.
Her answer was to swiftly start vomiting. I assume at the **** done here or by fear of me. It was a common occurrence in humans.
I checked on the wounded man she had been with and found him dead, he had died of a slashed throat. Nothing to be done.
When the woman was done vomiting, she spoke "Is my father dead?"
"Yes, I'm sorry"
Tears rolled down her face as she began to stand up. "I ... I... I don't know what to do." she said
"Bury him and remember his deeds. Then move on"
"Can you help me?" she asked, her voice shaking.
In no hurry to make the city, I then assisted with the funeral rites of their people, he was buried and words were said over his grave. While she took some time alone, I went to take care of the bandit corpses. Surely left there would be a message to others but then it would also attract predators to the smell of meat. So I took what belongings of theirs I assumed held worth and tossed the rest with their bodies in a shallow ditch a few minutes away from the road.
When I returned to the road, the woman was on her cart. "Can we travel together... for safety?"
I nodded, as having her with the wagon would most likely assist my entry to the city.
"I'm Cara"
"Varron of the Carcharodons"
"Nice to meet you" she said and then we started on towards the city
