Chapter 45 by Duskford Duskford

The afternoon is coming to its end, what happens next?

Zack goes looking for Chloe and Gavin

After he had talked to Victoria about which books and movies that they liked the most, the blonde was summoned by Heather to help with dinner and Zack was left alone on the deck. He went over to the rail and gazed at the lake.

”It’ll get dark soon and they didn’t come back yet.” He thought, looking at his watch and seeing that it was displaying ‘5:22 P.M.’.

Zack stood there for a few more minutes before the concern for his closest friends won over any tiredness that he was feeling due to the long walks in which he already had gone earlier in the day. He went back inside the cabin, storming through the glass double doors.

Heather and Victoria were in the kitchen deciding what they were going to cook for dinner when he entered and got startled by the **** with which he opened the door.

“Zack?” Heather asked, noticing the hard expression on his eyes.

He stopped in his tracks and went back to the two girls. “I’m going to go look for Chloe and Gavin,” He informed them. “I have a nagging feeling that Kurt didn’t tell us the whole story.”

“What?” The blue eyed brunette shot back. “No, it’s way too late to go wander in the woods, let me call Jennifer instead.”

“Heather’s right, Zack,” Victoria chimed in. “Soon you won’t be able to see at all out there.”

“Girls,” Zack said, surprising them with the seriousness in his voice. “They’re my oldest friends, I can’t live with myself if something happened to them.”

Heather smiled softly. “We won’t be able to change your mind, will we?”

Zack shook his head in negative. Victoria suddenly got a determined look on her face. “Then I’m going with you.” The blonde stated.

“Absolutely not!” Zack replied vehemently. “I won’t put anybody else in danger!”

“But I want to come with you!” The blonde argued. “You can’t stop me from going.”

“Please, Victoria, we just had a wonderful time on the deck,” He said and Heather frowned. “I don’t wanna ruin that by arguing with you.”

Victoria was taken aback by what he said, suddenly feeling guilty for nagging him. ”But I really want to help!” She shouted inside her mind.

“You won’t come, will you?” Zack asked, needing to be sure that no one would follow him.

“Okay, I won’t.” Victoria assured him.

“Good,” He smiled and then turned to Heather. “I’m going to get a few things and my backpack, could you please fix something for me to bring on the trek in case I take too long to return?”

Heather nodded with a smile of her own. “Sure, I’ll make you a few more sandwiches.”

“Thanks.” Zack said, leaning in and briefly kissing her left cheek. Doing the same with Victoria, he turned around and went over to the room he was sharing with Kurt.

Victoria gazed at his back for a few seconds and then turned to Heather. “I’m going to pick up something in our room while you prepare the sandwiches, okay?”

The brunette nodded and walked over to the fridge as the blonde went to their room. Once inside, Victoria closed the door and quickly grabbed her backpack, starting to stuff its inside with things that she thought she would need.

“Sorry, Zack,” She whispered. “But if you think you’re going on an adventure without me, you’re sorely mistaken.”

About ten minutes later, Zack stepped out of the room with his backpack on his back. Luckily for him, Kurt was sleeping when he went inside, which fortunately prevented him from confronting the older guy about Chloe and Gavin.

He crossed over the cabin to the kitchen, where Heather was already waiting for him with the sandwiches wrapped in white paper. “Sure you don’t want me to call Jennifer?” she asked, concern on her face.

He nodded. “I’ll call you if I need help.” He reassured her with a smile as he put the sandwiches inside his pack.

“Okay then, be careful out there.” She said, gazing into his eyes. Zack felt a strong urge to kiss her, but he figured that until they had talked about what happened in the cave behind the waterfall, it was best if he refrained from doing anything sexual with the cheerleader captain.

“I will, don’t you worry,” Zack broke the eye contact and then looked around. “Where’s Victoria?”

“Oh, she went to our room to get something.” Heather answered.

“Ok, bye, then,” Zack said. “I’ll try to be back as soon as possible.”

Heather nodded, looking like she was very worried about him. Zack waved at her and left the cabin from the back doors. What he didn’t see was that Victoria was spying on him from the window in her room and slipped out after him when she thought that he already was far enough to not notice her following him.

What happens in the woods? Does Zack notice Victoria following him? And where are Chloe and Gavin?
