Zack and Heather

Just in front of Kurt and Lisa, Heather and Zack walked side by side, both silent and introspective. Zack was caught in a mental battle with himself, frustrated by the actions of his girlfriend and mother, whose inability to control their sexual urges were causing harm to him and those around him. He imagined the anger of his father if he found out about his mother’s extramarital lip-locking with Robert Ravers. Would he divorce her? He and Taylor were old enough now that his parents might not stay together simply for the sake of their kids. And Taylor…how would she react? Would she be more understanding of their mother or would the revelation leave her annoyed and saddened as he was?

He should never have gotten involved with Ashley in the first place. Not that he didn’t love her or relish their time together, but it would have been a simpler life to just have told her no, and stuck with Chloe. Or maybe he was just kidding himself. Only a few days after his and Chloe’s break up, Chloe had snuck into Gavin’s room and fucked him despite his relationship with Victoria. In the right circumstances, maybe even Chloe would have betrayed him. He couldn’t even count on Gavin, who had withheld Lisa’s true intentions from him. If he were to go back in time, it wouldn’t be to that day in the woods where he’d uttered those damned words ‘maybe something’. He’d go back to that party, stayed away from the booze and never cheated on Lisa.

There he went, being naïve again. Being with Lisa and possibly not coming to the cabin wouldn’t really have changed anything. He learned a vital lesson from that night, a lesson he’d put into practice when he could have cheated on Ashley with Lisa at the Rivera cabin. A lesson he’d failed to put into practice when he cheated on Chloe with Ashley. And none of this would change the fact that his mother found herself unable to control her sexual urges around other men. Maybe it was genetic. He was biological predisposed to cheat. In which case, how could he really judge his mother, or Ashley when he really wasn’t any better himself…

Beside the dark haired boy, Heather glared ahead at his mother. She tried to quench the feelings of envy, to tell herself she was being pathetic, like a stupid little school girl with a crush. But it never lasted. No more than five minutes later, she’d look at her father and feel warm all over and that same bitterness towards Monica Bishop would rise again. Maybe she would tell Zack’s father…no, that might only drive her father and Zack’s mother closer. She could tell Monica that she really had walked in on her father about to kiss her. She might not be so keen to fuck him if she knew about their incestuous desires. That too could back fire though, if Monica actually went to the police. Even if he could avoid the law, if that information got out it could cause a scandal and affect the reputation of her father and his businesses.

Heather groaned at herself, disgusted that she was actually plotting and planning on how to steal her father away from another woman. He was right, this never bothered her before, not until she saw Brandon and Madison fucking in their car, not until Kurt opened the can of worms, asking about her fantasies. Hell, she’d been able to fool around with Kurt for days without thinking of her father. So, this wasn’t just an incestuous thing. She shook her dark hair, and decided it was best to try and forget about these feelings. Her father would leave after the hike and she wouldn’t see him again until the end of Spring Break. “You ready to talk?” She asked, turning he head towards Zack. “I mean about Ashley and Lisa. You didn’t want to earlier.”

“I don’t know,” Zack admitted. “It’s weighing on my mind a lot, but I still don’t think I have it straight enough in my head for it to make sense to anyone else.”

“Try me,” Heather suggested, eager for the distraction. “Sometimes talking is better than thinking.”

“Alright,” Zack agreed, and lowered his voice, not wanting his mother to overhear. “Well, you know about Ashley and Kurt. Do you know she had a weird sort of threesome last night with Gavin and Vicky?”

“What?” Heather’s jaw dropped. “No, I did not know about that. Wow…way to go, Gavin…way to go, Vicky. She’s not usually the type of girl to get into that kind of thing.”

“Well, she got into it. Mostly from Ashley’s prompting, as I understand it. Ashley said it started out as an exercise in helping Gavin and Victoria get closer after the whole Chloe situation.” Zack explained. “Then, as she put it, she got carried away in the moment.”

“I can see how that might be upsetting. Karmic for how you screwed over Chloe, but upsetting, sure,” Heather retorted, causing Zack to wince at the idea that he might have deserved this. “But I don’t see how Lisa fits in.”

“I assume you know that she told Gavin she wants to get back together with me?” Zack asked, having already accepted that he was likely the last to know.

“Hm, yeah,” Heather nodded. “But even if she jumped you, you could say no…unless you didn’t say no and fucked her to get back at Ashley for cheating. In which case, I hope Ashley dumped your ass.”

“No, not quite, but thanks for the support,” Zack shot back. “It was actually Ashley’s idea. She arranged for Lisa to seduce and fuck me so that we’d been even. She even mentioned it to me before and I declined, but she went ahead and planned it anyway. Except, when she found out that Lisa wanted more than a one-time thing, she got nervous and tried to end it.”

“That’s not the end of the story, though, right?” Heather perceptively guessed.

“No, they fought, and it sort of ended up with us all fucking each other…” Zack revealed. “But I didn’t think you’d want the details about that.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right about that,” Heather agreed. “And by the way, I take back what I said about this being karmic. Not in the slightest.”

“Right, so, as fun as it was, I’m left with a girlfriend who keeping messing around with other people and started setting me up to do the same. But I don’t want to be shared or share Ashley. I just want her,” Zack said, rubbing his head. “But, I don’t think she can live without the thrill of…something. Being watched, cheating, anything really besides vanilla, monogamous coupling.”

Heather laughed, making Zack frown.

“I don’t see how this is funny,” he barked.

“It’s not,” she said, still stifling her laughter though. “But you’re talking to probably the one person on this trip that understands what you’re going through.”

“Really?” Zack asked, incredulous.

“Well, not personally; when I’m exclusive with a guy, I do expect him to be exclusive too,” Heather elaborated. “But, I’m talking about my mother.”

“Your mom?” Zack repeated, glancing towards Robert Ravers, walking just ahead of them.

“Yeah, see my dad has always had a strong sexual appetite. Like Daddy, like daughter, I guess. But when he met my mum, he loved her so much he wanted to settle down, with just her and me.” Heather continued.

“But, your parents are divorced, right?” Zack recalled.

“Yep, see, for all that my dad wanted to change for my mum, he couldn’t. It’s like you said, he needed the thrill and he couldn’t resist other women. It’s just who he was. Rather than go behind my mum’s back, and hurt her more than necessary, he told my mum how he felt,” Heather said, Zack leaning in and listening to her every word. “They decided to split but lived together and raised me together.”

“That’s amazing,” Zack said, stroking his chin thoughtfully. “And your mum? How did she cope?”

“She understood, though was obviously still heartbroken that she wasn’t enough for him. But she recognised that she couldn’t stand in the way of who my father truly was.” Heather answered. “She’s had a few serious relationships since and moved on, though she never remarried.”

“I see.” Zack pursed his lips, still unsure of his next move. “Does that mean you don’t believe people can change?”

Heather shrugged. “What you’re really asking is if I think Ashley and my father are the same…to which I can only say, I don’t know. Ashley never cheated on Brandon, or even looked at another guy during their two years together until you came along. And, Ashley hasn’t exactly been going behind your back, or deceiving you. She’s made mistakes and every time, she’s confessed to them.”

“Argh,” he growled. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

“I can’t tell you that either,” Heather replied sympathetically. “Listen, Ashley’s my friend and I’ll go to bat for her any day of the week. If you make her happy, then that’s what I’ll pull for. But if you want the Latina, be with the Latina and don’t jerk Ashley around.”

“That’s the problem,” Zack admitted. “I don’t know what I want.”

“Yes,” Heather concurred. “That is the problem.”

Zack returned to his pensive silence. Heather had been right; talking did help. He didn’t have the solution, and he was still troubled by what he should do next…but talking with Heather had helped him straighten out the mess in his mind. If only he could decide what or who he wanted. He came to the cabin for Victoria, fallen for Chloe and now he was stuck between Ashley and Lisa. If only he knew which one would really make him happy. If only he knew exactly what the future held.
