"His name is Yusuuf Barre. He owns some gas stations in town and is quite assertive. I think you'll like him." Elizabeth just stared at Douglas.

"Umm...where is he from?" she asked, her nose wrinkling. Douglas cleared his throat, wiping Emily's mouth and offering her a bite of soft food. It was a one step forward, two steps back process, much like her mother.

"He was born in Somalia, but raised in the United States." Elizabeth continued staring, her perfect blue eyes wide and pretty.

"I mean, do you think it's a good idea? It doesn't sound particularly safe. And it sounds very ... different," she said slowly. It wasn't coming out right, and Douglas seized the moment.

"So he's too Black for you? You want an Uncle Tom type perhaps?" Elizabeth bit her lip.

"No. I'm sorry, it came out wrong. Let's meet him and see if this will work."
