Chapter 3 by Orlog4 Orlog4

Time to grow up. Describe how it was!

You were just the child of farmers. Nothing special ... until one careless day.

The following years you spent a lot of time with growing up and learning about the world around you. It seems this world is called Calitian and as much as people tell you, it is ruled by more or less allied governments, as well as minor independent ones. Kingdoms and even some republics join forces to protect themselves from enemies, to increase their prosperity or to conquer weaker states together. Still, several of such alliances are rather fragile and could easily come to a bloody, unpleasant end.

However, humans are not the only intelligent species on Calitian. There are several more. Next to humans there are elves, dwarfs and orcs. You know these from several fantasy novels which you assume you liked very much in your previous life. These are the four major species. There are more, but you don’t know much about them.

In fact, your information about all this is very limited, because you are neither part of a royal family, nor of a noble house. You are born into a simple farming family in a kingdom called Priluxandria. Living as a peasant’s daughter sounds harsher then it was. You had to help on the fields and take care of the livestock, but you got regularly breaks because you were a girl and were expected to knit and cook for everyone else.

Your new father was a little strict and demanded you and your siblings do your chores on the farm, but he also made sure you all enough to eat and a warm fire in your home. Also, your early self-awareness helped you avoiding conflict. Your mother was very loving and cared for your and your siblings all the time. Despite you already went through all of this, you felt very protected and educated for most of the time. And after some years you began to view this new life really as your life and not as some kind of wired dream.

You still had to be careful to not look like a weirdo, which was not easy, thanks to your memories of your previous life. Some things in Calitian were just so different than on earth. Most people can’t read or swim, the different religions were just strange for you and since you originally came from a democratic society, you had of course no respect of nobles, much to your parents’ horror.

Speaking about siblings, you got three of them. Theodor is your older brother. He was born two years before you. You are not sure, but you think you had an older brother in your previous life which you liked very much. Maybe this is part of the reason you and Theodor are so close. He was always gentle, helped you at work, protected you when necessary and even showed you basic swordfight with a stick. You also got a younger brother. His name is Milan and he was easily described as a coward. He often hid somewhere and stayed close to your mother. It got better when he became older, but he was always viewed as a coward little snitch by others. Your youngest sibling was a girl again. Tina is her name, but you barely got to know her. she was still a baby when something happened that changed your new life.

One day, there was a traveling monk with a book knocking at your door and wanted to buy some food for his pilgrimage. While he talked to your rather sceptic father, you took a closer look at his bible, because it was the first book you ever saw in this life. To your luck, the written language was almost the same as the one on earth. But since the spoken language was too, you didn’t question it.

Looking back, you should have known that your father and the monk noticed you. And of course, they were more than confused when they found you reading a holy book with no previous education. A first you didn’t understand them because you were used to everyone being able to read. When you remembered your special situation, you had to make something up quickly, to avoid raising any unwanted suspicion. You honestly very unrealistic lie was that last time when you and your mother sold your crops in the closest town last time, you listened to the mayor reading the verdict of a criminal from a document and you had no problem understanding the meaning of every letter.

Your father was not fully convinced and asked the elder of the nearby village to test your skills. It would have been smart to act like you would only understand the bare minimum of the text he showed you and convince everybody that you are just a highly skilled but otherwise normal girl. But stupid and unworldly as you are, you read the text perfectly and even did some basic calculation before you realized your mistake. The next day you were woken up early by your father and put on his ox cart. A long, silent travel followed to an unknown destination.

Where is he taking you?
