You were a monster

"Are you sure you want to know?" I ask.

"I asked, didn't I?"

I let out a long sigh. "We had such a great dinner, your mom found us, I drove us home just to be safe..."

"Yes yes, I remember that part. THEN what?"

"We started working on the bags, listening to music and drinking wine. It was not the worst way to spend an evening. But..."I look away from her uncomfortably, "To put it bluntly--when you got really drunk, you were a total monster." Victoria's whole face tightens at once.

I lean into the truth to add the details in that she will recognize as her behaviours. "A song you liked came on and you literally **** me to dance with you. It was okay at first but you were falling all over us both. I had to clean up a wine spill at some point. You were starting arguments... Oh! And making fun of me for...getting aroused when I first say you in that dress. You called it a 'stiffy'. Never heard that one before." She continues to listen stoically. "Then you said stuff that made no sense to me, as if you thought I was someone else. It was weirding me out. I finally just gave you water and put you to bed so that I could finish all the bags. It took me until four to get them all done."

Victoria swallowed. She looks tense. "And when you 'put me to bed' what was I wearing?"

"Well I didn't undress you if that is what you are asking. Your clothes looked like they were comfortable to sleep in, and it isn't my business."

"You mean my gala dress?"

"Huh? No... just a shirt with some leggings. You changed as soon as we got to the house. Why? You don't remember any of that?"

"Yeah--I remember...changing but... Nevermind. And that was the last time you saw me? When I went to bed?"

"Yeah. I did hear a toilet flush...so you were awake for a while, you made some other noises, like you were up to something, but thankfully you never came out. I had a lot to do. The dinner was amazing, but I wasn't getting paid to babysit. I don't think there is more to say about it. I let myself out and only got two hours of sleep for the second day in a row." That feels like a good place to let things hang for a minute. She must be hating herself right now. I have no doubt that she has heard some similar versions of this story in the past. Stories about Blackout Vikki. She can sit and stew on that while suffering through her hangover.

"What did I say? When I thought you were someone else."

I wonder if this is just curiosity, or does she have specific concerns about it? I wonder if there is anything I can say to draw more out of her, but I don't come up with anything. "I didn't catch most of it... You were slurring by then." I hesitate and give her a troubled look. "Eh... then... you almost kissed me. I'm sure you are a great kisser and all, but...not like THAT." I make a sour face off to the side. "Thankfully you came to your senses enough to recognize me and change your mind. That was when I finally convinced you to go to your room to sleep it off."

Victoria is rigid and struggling with something. There is anger and shame, then some other things... recognition? Regret and loathing? Self-loathing? She is so low right now that she isn't fighting back. Well, after knocking her ass down this far I should help her back up.

I give her a sympathetic look. "Pardon me for saying so, but you still look like shit. I'll brew you a little hangover cure in a bit. That board meeting will be starting soon."

"Sure....Thank you." She says, starting to actually put her things away.
