She seemed to settle down, raising her back in her cushioned chair once again and regaining her sad smile. "Do you really think so?" When you nodded, she cast her eyes downward, avoiding your gaze. "I'm not so certain. Every day, I pray to Geod or consult Sister Rosary for clarity. Geod's demands can be so cryptic… Oh, and poor Mattieu…"

You reassured her, telling her that Mattieu was taking it as well as any man could. She was too. It was an odd situation, but you could tell they were making the best of it.

She chuckled, turning her eyes toward you with a look of shame but a smile on her lips. "Oh, dear. I hope that I, as a saintess, can prove myself worthy of your kindness you're showing me."

You finished tea and helped Helmid to clean up. You felt like you'd said the right thing, but the odd tension on her face when she talked about her husband never seemed to dissipate after that moment, not until you took your leave.
