Chapter 4

Vain
What is her fate?
You give her a chance to prove herself
You watch as your words sink into the poor girl's head, and she lowers her teary eyes to the ground in utter defeat.
"But I'll give you a chance." You tell her, feeling a strange sense of sympathy for the child, and approach her while drawing one of your curved daggers from your belt. "Here! Let's see what you can do..."
The girl hesitates for a moment, staring at the blade in your hand while you order one of the warriors to cut her loose. Some of your tribesmen react in alarm when they see their captive with a weapon in her hand, but soon they're all scoffing as they see she can barey wield it in her trembling hands.
"Now, come at me...!" You instruct her, and see her eyes grow wide as you draw your second blade. How she could possibly think she'd be and become a warrior is beyond you, but you try your best to keep from laughing as she holds out her weapon in front of her.
What follows is hardly a fair fight, but each time she drops or loses her weapon you allow her to pick it right up again. Despite of her insecurity she's actually making some slow progress as you give her some pointers, though you doubt she'll ever make it through an actual fight.
She does provide your warriors with some amusement for a while at least, which was the main plan of your actions, and within an hour you've proved to them what a harmless being she is. Eventually most of them have returned to their duties, leaving you alone with your captive.
"You still have a lot to learn." You tell her when you disarm her once again, and this time put both of your daggers back in your belt again. "I'll let you free to see the amazons though. Or escort you back to your village, if you like."
"W-wait...!" She tries to object, having dropped to her knees as her legs can't seem to carry her anymore. How she was able to stay up for as long as she did is a mystery to you, but as you look into her eyes you see a determination that you hadn't noticed before. "You're right... I'll never make a good warrior like this..."
"With enough practise you'd at least be able and defend yourself." You say, and not just purely out of pity for her. She really couldn't get much worse, at least. "I'll find some warriors that will see you safely back home."
"No, I can't go back!" She suddenly objects, surprising you again with that determination in her eyes. Her dreams are gone however, and you can see she's grabbing for the last straws now. "Would you... teach me, if I stayed...?"
"That's not a small thing to ask for!" You tell her, and can't keep from laughing a little before you stop to give it some thought. Looking the girl over again, you can tell that training her will take a lot of time, and you really don't know what she can offer in return for your trouble. Still you find the idea of having a human as your disciple to be strangely appealing, making you nod your head in agreement. "But you'll need to work for your stay, just like everyone else in my tribe..."
"Yes, of course!" She's quick to agree, as surprised as yourself about your answer, and then start to look around for something she could do. "I know how to cook, and to stitch, and to gather some food..."
Will that be enough to earn her stay...?
