Chapter 5 by Primal356 Primal356

Are you safe?

You encounter something strange

You tilt your back against the wall, and take a deep breath. You did it. The chances were against you, but you were able to escape the pirates.

“Next time, if we go to an uncharted sector, I am the one picking the course, alright?” Elena says.

“Sure,” you nod.

BANG!!!

Then there is another shockwave rippling through the hull.

“Elena, what’s happening?” you ask, motionless, seeing the flock of red lights appear on the consoles.

“Looks like the FTL drive got damaged,” she answers. ”I’m not sure how long we can keep going with this. Probably not long.”

“Are there any nearby planets?” you ask. It would be a shame, if you would have to send a distress signal, and lead those pirates right back to you.

“Uhm, I’m picking up something,” Elena says.

“Something?” you dart.

“It looks like a rogue planet, but it’s... strange. It looks like it just came out of FTL,” she answers.

“Then it just came out of FTL!” you shrug. “Come on! What can we lose?” you ask.

“Okay, one FTL rogue planet to go,” she answers.

Lucky for you, it only takes a couple minutes to get there. By that time the FTL drive is at the edge of overheating, so you are glad that you can finally see the rogue planet in front of you. Or whatever it is.

You see some sort of space station in the window: large ovalic head, a tube-like structure descending towards the bottom, additional hubs spiraling out of the tube. What shocks you is that the entire thing seems like a living organism rather than a thing made of metal, with gigantic feelers sprouting out of the superstructure, sweeping the darkness of space in every direction.

“Okay, couldn’t we just call back the pirates?” you ask.

“Too late,” Elena answers.

With your FTL drive gone and only a portion of your thrusters working, the station begins to pull in your vessel, and all Elena could do is to steer the ship towards what seems like an opening rather than being grabbed by the feelers, or running the ship into the bulk of the living thing proper.

Inside the station you see what resembles the ground of a small planet. Most of the area is covered with the same material as the hull, with the occasional buildings and patches of green between them. You also note that the local gravity is just as strong as with other planets. Luckily the station didn’t pull you in with the same effect from the get-go, and with the help of the remaining thrusters, Elena is able to land the ship in one piece.

“Well, we are here,” Elena says. “So what now?”

What's next?
