Chapter 36 by Trom1806 Trom1806

What are your next steps?

You decide to run from the store.

You understand that you need to act as quickly as possible.

If you stay in this store and continue to fight, the chance of representatives of the city guard appearing will only increase.

You should clearly avoid the attention of the city guards...

You turn around and open the door to the street.

Then you quickly run out of the store. You quickly run through the streets of the Quarter of Big Market.

Screams are heard behind you.

Fortunately, these screams are difficult to discern in the hubbub of crowds of people walking on the street.

While you are running as fast as possible, several city guard patrols are trying to catch up and stop you. No wonder. Your running figure is too suspicious.

However, you manage to break away from your pursuers thanks to your agility, speed and the fact that the streets of this quarter are quite crowded (during the escape there was a funny moment - you tripped one of the passers-by, who then fell right in front of the city guard who was trying to pursue you; the result : two swearing bruised persons who are lying on the dirty paving stones of the street).

Despite unforeseen difficulties, you carried out the order of your employer (the moneylender Etario), you handed the envelope to the alchemical goods merchant Melton Kvarbur.

The consequences of completing this task were completely extraordinary. It was not at all like a normal parcel delivery. You barely escaped the risk of going to jail.

However, now it is time for you to return to the outlying slum areas of the city. You need to come to the house of the moneylender Etario to report on the completion of the task and to talk about the events that took place.

So, you leave the Quarter of Big Market and you return to the slum outskirts of the city.

You are again walking through the streets of the South Gate Quarter.

It is already evening time when you return to the house of the moneylender Etario. Muscular armed guards let you inside this building without any questions (they were probably warned that you work for the loan shark Etario). When you knock on the door that leads to the moneylender's office, it is opened by a familiar half-orc man in leather armor, whose face is covered with many scars and has a burn on his chin. The half-orc's look in your direction shows some surprise.

You enter the office of the moneylender Etario Cross-Eyed.

The pompous luxury of the moneylender Etario’s office still looks pretentious and contrasts with what can be seen on the streets of the outlying slum areas of the city.

The moneylender is still sitting in a deep, soft chair, which is located in the center of the room.

Looking sideways in your direction, Etario blows dust from the sleeve of his luxurious dark green camisole, which was covered with gold embossing.

Etario then says, chuckling: “Ah, I see you’ve returned safely! How is the respected alchemical goods merchant Melton Kvarbur doing? Ha! Ha! I guess he was impressed with our “gift”! Ha! Ha!"

You say: “Yes, master Etario... I handed the envelope personally into the hands of Melton Kvarburg... The contents of the envelope were very... very... impressive to him. I had to make an effort to avoid being caught by his bodyguards and escape from the store.”

Etario grins and nods, his eyes sparkling with satisfaction.

"Ah, I see you did well. My assumption that you are just a clumsy and useless hillbilly guy was not justified! You are clearly a deft guy... This means that you can be useful... Now tell me, what is your opinion? Will that arrogant bastard Melton Kvarbur agree to pay us monthly? Or will we have to cut off pieces of the body from his screaming wife in horror until she dies, and this idiot Kvarbur will never cooperate with us?" - he asks, leaning forward in the luxurious chair.

You consider the question.

Then you answer: “I think a little more and Melton Kvarbur will be completely broken morally. He did not tell the city guards immediately after his wife was kidnapped (otherwise I would have been ambushed by the city guards at the store). Soon he will agree to pay monthly tribute. He loves his wife too much. Therefore, it is unlikely that he would consciously choose to sacrifice her life."

Etario grins at your response, “Okay, okay... So you are the right person for our job after all... Do you know who heads our organization?”

You say: “I only heard the nickname of this person... Merryman... I don’t know who this is... I only know that this person enjoys extensive influence in the outlying quarters of the city of Granveith...”

Etario wrinkles his face in a malicious grimace and says: “This is great! You don't need to know too much! You can consider that you have been accepted into our “confidential” organization...”

The moneylender quickly exchanges glances with the half-orc man.

The moneylender then continues to speak, rubbing his chin: "Now let’s discuss the payment details. How much do we owe?"

You carefully say: “As agreed. You pay me five silver coins. As payment for the unforeseen risk, I would ask you to give me some good dagger. This would be fair, because my dagger remained in the throat of one of the mercenary bodyguards who tried to capture me in the store of this merchant.”

Etario's eyes narrow when you ask for the dagger. Etario's face wrinkles. Your employer is clearly stingy. But this time your arguments convince him.

He sighs and says, turning to his half-orc bodyguard: “Javer give this guy some good dagger.”

While Etario is counting out the silver coins and packing them into a small pouch, a half-orc man (now you know his name is Javer) approaches you and hands you a small black dagger made of blued steel with a hilt that has a snake pattern.

The half-orc Javer grins unpleasantly and quietly says: “If you are not dexterous and careful enough, this dagger will soon have a different owner...”

Ten seconds later, your employer, the loan shark Etario, hands you your payment. A small bag with five silver coins. Now this is an insignificant amount for you, but you believe that at the moment your more important priority is the opportunity to acquire a permanent job and useful contacts in one of the influential organizations of this city.

It is not difficult for you to notice that for the moneylender Etario Cross-Eyed it is unpleasant to part with money. Even if it is such a modest amount as five silver coins. But you faithfully completed his task. Therefore, he is **** to pay you, overcoming his greed.

Etario says: “You carried out my order. You have received your payment. You can go. I still have a lot of important things to do today. Perhaps in a week I will have another task for you, guy..."

You bow respectfully and leave the moneylender's office. And then you go outside from his house.

Where will you go now?
