Chapter 9 by Trom1806 Trom1806

You are busy searching for information that is important to you. What will happen next?

You are impressed by this library. While you are looking for important information, you remember what you heard about this library.

As you slowly studied page by page, thoughts regarding this library appeared in your mind.

You were impressed by the majestic appearance of this library and you tried to remember what you might have heard about this library from any of the inhabitants of the city of Skelweerd or from any of the inhabitants of the surrounding lands.

You continue to study the contents of the book and you try to strain your memory.

Gradually, memories of conversations with different people in which this library was mentioned appeared in your memory. You had heard some information about this library from some of the patrons of the tavern where you worked.

The further you look into the depths of your memory, the more information you remember about this library. Probably, this library was often mentioned in conversations of local residents due to the fact that it was a landmark of the city.

This library was built about 10 years ago by order of the current ruler of the city of Skelweerd, Countess Adelheida Devarten. The locals often gossiped about the extravagant character of Countess Adelheida, who was currently an old human woman (she was now almost 60 years old) and who had ruled the city of Skelweerd and the lands surrounding it for about 24 years. The Countess inherited her title from her father, who died during the war between the human Sacred Kingdom of Orlania and the elven island state called the Free City of Tior-Faen. In one of the fierce naval battles between humans and elves, the count was killed during a boarding attack by some mercenaries on the flagship of the human flotilla. Unfortunately, his only son and heir died along with the count. Besides his son, the deceased count had only a daughter named Adelheida. Therefore, it was this daughter who became the Countess of the city of Skelweerd.

Countess Adelheida experienced many turmoil in her life. And these shocks include not only the **** of his father and brother. About 14 years ago, the Countess's husband and her son died due to a cholera epidemic. At the moment, of the closest relatives of Countess Adelheida, only her young (he is about 8 years old) grandson is alive, who is now the heir to the count's title.

Due to the sad events that happened in her life, Countess Adelheida became an extremely pious and ascetic woman. She began to invest heavily in the construction of temples and various charitable causes.

However, the most extravagant of Countess Adelheida's actions was the decision to build a library in the city of Skelweerd, which would be available to the common people free of charge. This fact shocked the nobles of the city of Skelweerd and the nobles of the entire Sacred Kingdom of Orlania. The Countess herself explained her action by saying that she sought to spread as much as possible among the common people the light of knowledge and the beneficial influence of the true faith (that is, the Church of the Equally Great Brother-Deities Orlan and Alaratos).

After all, a significant part of the books in this library were books of religious content.

Of course, the library of the city of Skelweerd was not the largest in the Kingdom of Orlania. For example: a much more extensive library was located in the capital of the Kingdom of Orlania, the city of Agnerta (this library is located at the Royal Academy of Magical Arts). However, the library of the city of Skelweerd has a unique difference: it can be accessed by poor commoners. In many other libraries, you would have to pay a lot of money for the right to access books (after all, books are very expensive and difficult to produce things). In some other libraries, access to books was not possible for commoners at all due to the need for the visitor to have a high social status (nobility) or belong to a special organization (for example: to be a representative of the Royal Academy of Magical Arts).

Therefore, the library of the city of Skelweerd was important in the territory of the continental possessions of the Sacred Kingdom of Orlania. Local residents were proud of this landmark in their hometown and often referred to the library as the "Great Library of Skelweerd." Of course, the epithet “great” did not correspond to the size of the library, but this epithet emphasized the importance of this library for the common people who lived in the city and in the county areas surrounding the city.

You think: “I am very lucky that there is such a unique library in the city of Skelweerd!”

So you continue to slowly study the pages of the book. You read quite slowly. Reading is clearly not a developed skill of yours.
