"Fuck. Fine. Fucking fine. Suit yourself." She exhales. "Go inside, then. I’ll be just a moment."

The Drum has not quieted on your return. A drunken flatfoot staggers towards you, pawing at your face, grabbing the air and finally finding the door frame. Another, less drunk, offers a curt nod by way of greeting.

You wait for the Spirited Waitress at the bar, mostly ignored by the merry-making Greencoats.

”Rum?” she asks. "For you and that lot?" Her short black dress barely covers her naked legs. Stains and greasy handprints cover her once-white apron. "Price is the same." She looks paler than usual, but her smile seems defiant. "So pay up."

And she soon dances through sawdust, a tray in each hand. The patron’s grasping hands follow her, greedy for drink and for her body. She dodges some and wards the others by pushing small glasses filled with dark, sticky liquid at them. One earns himself a peck on the cheek and a second glass when he withdraws his hand from between her legs. A few only spare her a glance and ignore you, gulping down the Rum without interrupting their chats.

The others show their gratitude, some even to you. The Waitress receives kind words and allows some tips, small coins slipped inside her garter. And they wait for her to reach your table until they raise their glasses and cheer – for you, but mostly still for her.

You raise your glass, and the Rum burns your throat and sticks to your lips. The Spirited Waitress licks hers clean and searches under her skirt for scarps, tarnished or glimmering. You catch a glimpse of frilly underwear and the outline of shaven lips. Then she dances away to take the bold flatfoot by the hand. They disappear back into the alley, followed by the cheers of drunken coppers.
