Chapter 17 by tempura tempura

Accept her offer?

You accept, but Yu's not happy.

You weigh your options. It was clear that the woman had experience; her ability to follow you stealthily and her knowledge of the trap's location was evidence enough of this. And if there was one thing you and Yu could use right now, it'd be experience. And if she'd really intended you harm, she wouldn't have cut free.

Coming to a decision, you extend your hand. "I look forward to our partnership."

Unfortunately, Yu is less thrilled with the prospect of a team up. "Are you kidding me!?" she angrily interjects, storming over and pulling you off to the side. Uh oh. "This bitch lured us into a trap, knocked you out, and threatened our lives, and you're gonna agree to let her partner up with us, without even asking me, just like that? She hasn't even APOLOGIZED!"

You swallow. "Listen, I'm sorry, okay? I should've talked with you first. But this? This is too good of an opportunity to let down. Our prediction was right; people here are less than inviting. The trap proves it. And someone friendly- err, relatively friendly, someone with experience in- well, in not dying, just shows up? We can't afford to be choosy right now. I'm sorry for being hasty, but we need this."

Yu narrows her eyes. "Fine. But ONLY because we've seen her quirk, and I'm confident I could kick her ass. And I'm still mad!"

You turn back to the woman nervously, extending your hand once more. She accepts, shaking it firmly. "I don't think we ever introduced ourselves. I'm-"

"You're Ren Yamada, she's Yu Takeyama, and I'm Haya Hisakawa." she says flatly, cutting you off. "We need to leave now. We've been here too long."

"No thanks to you." Yu mutters under her breath.

The woman- no- Haya ignores that. "Follow me. I'll keep the pace down for you, and on the ground. Try to mimic my movements. You two move like a pair of elephants. Or perhaps... a pair of cows. "

With that, she darts away, heading east. You and Yu pause for a moment before dashing after her. "I said mimic my movements!" Haya admonishes. "Go around obstacles, not through them. Leaf in the wind."

After several minutes, you finally manage to get close enough to Haya to pant out a question. "S-so, what's the d... deal with your quirk?" you gasp.

"My quirk's called Biostasis." she replies, unphased by the aerobics. "By applying my 'band-aid' I'm able to temporarily pause or delay certain biological processes. Prior to being sent here, I worked as an ICU nurse and used it to stop patients from bleeding out. Dr. Ujiko sent me here after I accidently saw one of his monsters at the hospital."

"I don't- don't know who that is, b-but ok." you sputter, desperately running out of breath.

"That's how you knocked out Ren? You just put his body on pause?" Yu inquires. Haya nods, before suddenly freezing and motioning for you both to stop.

"What is it?" Yu asks. She responds by covering Yu's mouth with her hand, and staying still for one second more, before pulling you and Yu to the ground behind a bush. You begin to open your mouth, forming a question, but halt as you hear approaching voices.

"...I swear Suda! Like, I definitely heard people!" A girl? Her voice reminded you of the valley girl stereotype, albeit a bit deeper.

"Well? Where are they then?" This one was a guy. Quite the mocking tone. "We're near M's territory. Of course you're gonna hear people. Doesn't mean jack if you can't grab 'em. Fucking bimbo." A hearty round of guffaws rings out. Looks like there's a couple more guys.

The first man sighs. "Well, lookey here Ji-eun. Now we went aaaall out on this wild-goose chase; and our break is all spent! Now, I'm a forgiving man. I'll allow you to repay your debt." He pauses. "What'dya think boys? What's appropriate compensation?" More laughing and whispering. The man whistles. "Well, it's decided then! All you gotta do is show us a good time! It's not like it'd be a novel experience for one such as yourself. On the other hand... we could hog-tie you and leave you for M, as a present! You think Kugo would notice, let alone care, if Ji-eun went missing?" You hear nothing, but you can almost feel the girl's trembling.

"O-ok." she finally whispers, her voice quavering.

"That's a good girl, I knew you were good for a debt!"

Horrified, you glance to Yu. She meets your gaze, equally disgusted, but also enraged. She looks as though she's preparing to intervene. Haya's expression, on the other hand, is unchanged. She places a firm hand on both Yu and your shoulders, shaking her head no.

Intervene, or listen to Haya?
