Chapter 2
by FlightoftheBeers
Who do you want to start with?
You; Brenna
You remembered Brenna. All throughout school, she'd bullied Tegan. What Jake had been to you, she was to your wife. From some of the small run-ins you'd had with him already, you knew that Jake hadn't changed. Brenna wasn't even in the town anymore, so you were glad that at least Tegan was free.
Jake, though, was more like a Chihuahua than a Rottweiler: he would bark and make noise, but unless he had someone there to back up his words, he wouldn't start anything he couldn't finish. It has always seemed to be far more out of self-preservation than it was any genuine understanding of his own flaws and weaknesses.
Maybe that's why it had been so easy to lay him into the ground. He had come barking to you about 'this being his city' and that he was going to destroy you. When you simply ignored him, he took a swing at you. Cooler heads prevailed and led you to an easy counter. You weren't by any means a fighter, but in the one moment Jake had forgotten his self-preservation, yours had kicked in.
After a hospital stay, Jake kept rather far away from you. His eye was still on you, but he seemed far more skittish. Maybe the years of dealing with difficult people in the courtroom had made you immune to his jeers and taunts. Either way, you had given him a bitter dose of humiliation. This seemed to earn you some minor recognition from the folks around neighborhood.
Eventually, the word about you spread across the town. While it was nice to be treated this warmly, it was the small suggestions and rumors that tickled your ear. People recommended that you run for mayor while others spoke in hushed voices about potential lawmen closing in on Jake.
You didn't particularly want to be the mayor, but destroying him and taking his job would be extremely satisfying. And it's not like you didn't care for your hometown; you simply wanted to be a lawyer.
On the other hand, there was nothing stopping you from doing both. The town was small enough that it wouldn't be that difficult of an extracurricular. Plus, you would staff it with competent individuals rather than Jake's idiot buddies.
At the very least, you wanted more information. You didn't know the first thing about running a city, much less a campaign. If everyone seemed to want you to run, then you figured you'd at least give it a shot. The worst that could happen is losing and winning would only be positive, at least as far as you could tell. What you desperately needed was a competent team around you.
Apparently, someone from your hometown went off to become a big-shot campaign organizer. When your mom gave you the woman's card, though, things became a bit more complex. Brenna. You took the issue to Tegan to get her thoughts on it, honestly expecting the worst.
"Maybe before we moved here I would've said no. But people here support us, and you even got to stand up to your old high school bully. Maybe it's time I do the same. Besides, if she sucks, then we just tell her to fuck off." Tegan waved her hand dismissively. You knew her well-enough to know that she was a bit nervous about this, even if she didn't want to show it.
So you made her a deal: you'd go have the first meeting at a coffee shop without Tegan. She wanted you to get an idea about what kind of person Brenna was now. Would she be able to be cordial or would Tegan have to 'beat her up' too?
How does meeting Brenna go?
