Chapter 4 by gunde gunde

Is the journey to Tharros completed without interruption?

Yes

The following three days went by with few interruptions, Dareios making good speed as he moved through the increasingly civilized landscape. He had begun to meet travellers pretty soon after getting out on the main road leading to Tharros, and so had finally resigned himself and donned his cloak.

On the last day of travel, as the sun reached zenith and Dareios reckoned that he only had a few more hours of walking before reaching Tharros, hopefully even doing so before sundown, he could almost dance at the thought of soon being among women again.

It had been a week since last he had seen a woman naked, and both his mind and his body were by now aching for release. Acting upon those aches, Dareios quickly stepped up pace, more or less running down the road towards Tharros.

He couldn't keep that pace up forever, however, and he was walking at a more orderly pace again long before he had reached Tharros.

In the end, he managed to reach Tharros just before sundown, stopping on one of the hills that lied just further inland of the city to watch the sunlight reflected on the rooftops of the city's vast gathering of houses. Dareios came from a civilized society; he hadn't been raised in a hut, but even from a distance of several miles Tharros made his hometown seem like a tiny little country-hamlet.

Pulling his donkey with him, Dareios descended down the hill and across the open ground that lain in front of Tharros.

Despite that it was nearly evening, there was still plenty of people passing through the city gates, and Dareios found himself standing in cue, right behind a small group of traders from the clustered feudal kingdoms to the north of the city.

The traders proved to be quite talkative, and answered everything that Dareios could think to ask.

"No, a healthy donkey shouldn't fetch less than 100 pieces of gold. Anything less is nothing short of robbery. Course, if I was into buying and selling donkeys, I'd tell you that anything above 100 gold is nothing short of robbery!" One of them told him.

"The Kettle is the place for any man to go when visiting Tharros. Oh, the girls there are pretty, with big fat tits, or small pointy ones if you like that, and you'll find that some of them are ready to do anything, if the price is right!" Another one said not much later on.

"Work? Well, you can always sign on as mercenary if you're good with a sword, which it looks as though you are. Or you can be a guard, or a robber, though I'd advice against it, or a bouncer, or you can be some sort of adventurer. By Urdraigs fifty-sevens Hells, if you got what it takes, prostitution's always an option for a young man."

After passing through the gates, Dareios said goodbye to the traders, and headed towards the animal markets, following the directions that they had given him.

Just as the gates, the markets were brimming with life, giving Dareios the sense that Tharros wasn't a city where commerce ended along with the end of the day.

After haggling over the price with a merchant, Dareios walked away carrying his gear, one donkey poorer but 140 pieces of gold richer.

It was time to find a place to sleep, before hitting the town, Dareios figured.

What's next for Dareios on his first night in Tharros?
