Chapter 43

Do you go to the meeting?
Yes
You take a shower and get dressed in a polo t-shirt and jeans. You've never been to Washington, DC before, so you teleport to the Washington monument. It was a notable landmark that you had seen on television multiple times. You could have gone to the White House, but that was too risky.
Once in Washington, you hail a cab to take you to the address the mysterious woman had given you. It was one of many abandoned warehouses near the wharf. You pay the driver and look for the warehouse numbered 9. There's a small door with a keypad on it.
You knock twice and wait for a response. Nearly a minute passes and you knock again. This time, you hear footsteps on the other side of the door. Whoever it was, was hearing high heels.
The door opens, and you're greeted by a woman in red who's about your age. Her hair is unnaturally red, and she's wearing a skintight red leather bodysuit with red heels. Her lipstick matchs the color of her hair, and indeed, the only about her that isn't red was her snow white skin and sparkling green eyes.
"Come in," she says with a smile. She's not the person you spoke to on the phone.
You follow her inside, and the huge warehouse is empty except for a large round table in the middle, where 4 people are seated. There are four empty seats at the table, and the woman in red takes one, while you sit down beside her.
One of the other person around the table stands. She's older, probably in her late forties or early fifties. Her hair is jet black and she's wearing a fighter pilot's jumpsuit.
"Hello John. I'm Windstress."
"Windstress? Is that a nickname?"
"It's a codename. We all have them. We also all have magic rings," Windstress raises her left hand to show you hers. It looks just like one of your rings. You look around the table, and each person shows you theirs as well. "We each only have one, which gives us an unique power. We've never met anyone who has 5. "
"How do you know about me?"
A man next to Windress speaks up. "That would be the power of my ring. It allows me to sense magic being used, and I can see the person in my mind. It tells me everything about the person, from their birthday to food allergies."
"That's not very useful..." you say.
The man laughs. "Probably not as useful as your rings, but it comes in handy. I mostly play a supporting role here. My wife calls the shots. I'm Finder." He's referring to Windstress.
Windstress gives Finder a playful shove. "He's useful, trust me. He found you, didn't he? And we know all about you. My power gives me control of all air," she waves her hand and you feel a gust of wind, even though there are no windows in the warehouse. Then, she snaps her fingers, and suddenly you find it difficult to breathe, like all the air had been sucked out of your lungs.
You bang the table for help, and Windress makes another motion with her hand. In a split second, you can breathe again.
"What was that?!" you ask angrily.
"That was a demonstration. Don't be alarmed," Windstress says calmly. She proceeds to introduce the rest of the people around the table.
The woman who brought you in is Seductress, and her ring makes her irresistible to anyone she chooses, man or woman. The remaining two are also a couple. The man, Flyer, has the power of flight. The woman, Lightning, has super speed. They look like an ordinary suburban couple in their matching cardigans.
"We're the Guardians of Balance," Windstress says after introductions are made. "We make sure that evil is punished and good rewarded. We became aware of you shortly after you put on those rings, but we've been waiting to see what you would do with them. To be honest, we were split on whether you're good or evil, but the story on the mayor made it clear."
"So this is some sort of superhero team? Why haven't I heard of you all?"
"It's more of a magic ring appreciation club. We don't go on missions together nor do we seek fame. Our work stays in the shadows, and we support one another as needed," Windstress explains as she slides a burner phone across the table to you. "The phone has everyone's contacts. Call if you need anything."
You took the phone. "Is that it? Your call sounded urgent."
"It's complicated. One of our former members has gone rogue. Her codename is Changer, and her ring allows her to shapeshift. She can become anything or anyone."
"That's cool."
"Yes. Until she decided to rob banks and stole national secrets to sell to the North Koreans. She's out of control, and we need to stop her. Unfortunately, she's very smart and it's hard for us to keep up with her, even with my husband's magical ability."
"So what? You need me to catch her and hand her over to the police?"
"No, they wouldn't believe you. We'll find her. We need you to stop her and take her ring away before she does more harm."
You think about it for a second, looking around the room. They're all expecting an answer. "Fine. But I get to keep the ring."
Just before Windstress responds, you catch her exchanging a knowing look with Seductress. Something's amiss. "Agreed. We'll be in touch once we-" Windress stops mid-sentence as you freeze time.
You quickly search everyone for their wallets and real identities, and store them in your phone. Seductress' real name is Julia Watkins, 25, and lives in Washington. You decide to pay her a visit after this meeting, and resume time.
"-locate her."
"Good. I'll be leaving then," you say, and teleport back to New York.
