Chapter 18 by Master Haug Master Haug

Do the Ranchers eventually go away?

Yes

Damaskinos stared down the valley, which had lost its traditional green sheen at he bottom, this time replaced with patches of exposed dirt mixed in with a smell he could feel all the way from the edge of the snowed in area. He had waited a few days, watchful for any campfire from a straggler, before finally deciding he was safe and the valley had been once again emptied of goats and dwarves with the exhaustion of their food source and the approach of the inclement winter. He was not worried about starving, and his body was plenty immune to the effects of the weather, but fear still gnawed at his bones some dwarf was still on the valley for some god forsaken reason and would unveil his plans without mercy or warning.

But, campfire absent, the pattern of the animals on the floor of the valley back to the pre-goat invasion normal, he had no rational reason to believe so. He leapt invisibly down into the forest area and started making careful rounds on the whole valley, searching for any signals of civilized presence before redoing the circuit at a lower altitude, until finally he carefully swirled in the wind over the grasslands. The Valley was empty and he passed the danger safely.

He made his way back to the destroyed dungeon and started collecting his stuff, preparing to move back to his winter lair, where there was much grind to be done and many other cores to collect before the entire area was under snow. And grinding. Can't forget the grinding.

Many months pass
