Chapter 20
by

Does the Spiritbloom potion work?
Yes it does
The effect was instantaneous and apocalyptic. A shriek, high-pitched and inhuman and layered with a hundred demonic voices, tore from Chloe’s throat, a sound that seemed to bend the very air. Her body began to convulse violently, arching off the floor with enough **** to throw Liam clear across the room. The blazing red aura around her flared, then sputtered erratically like a faulty neon sign trying to spell out damnation. Black, oily smoke, thick and foul-smelling, began to pour from her mouth, her eyes, her ears, her nostrils.
“NO!” the layered, demonic voice screamed from within her, fighting against the potion’s purifying power. “THIS VESSEL IS MINE! I CLAIMED IT! I WILL NOT BE EVICTED!” Chloe’s body thrashed on the floor, a horrifying puppet in a war between magic and evil. Bones audibly cracked and reset themselves with sickening wet snaps. Her skin flickered rapidly between its normal, healthy tone and a deathly, grey, corpse-like pallor. It was a battle of wills made manifest, the pure, liberating magic of the Spiritbloom warring against the ancient, possessive evil of Valerius. For one terrifying moment, it seemed the demon might win. The red aura intensified, coalescing, pushing back against the encroaching silvery light of the potion.
But the Essence of Spiritbloom was an absolute, a fundamental law of this strange new reality. With a final, soul-shattering scream that cracked the plaster on the ceiling and shattered the windows in the dorm room, a monstrous, shadowy form was violently, brutally ejected from Chloe’s mouth. It was a being of pure nightmare, a chaotic tangle of shifting black smoke and shadow, vaguely humanoid but with too many limbs, too many joints, and burning crimson eyes that radiated an eternity of hatred and malice.
The shadow-demon, now fully corporeal in its hideous spirit form, turned its wrath back to Chloe’s limp body. It lunged, shadowy claws extended, aiming to reclaim the vessel. But Chloe’s spirit was faster. She was a streak of pure, silvery light, a comet of focused will. She surged forward and dove back into her own body.
Does she make it back into her body?
