Do you make it out of town without being seen?

Yes. Literally.

Chapter 72 by doppledon doppledon

You crane your neck around the edge of the building while the others wait behind, and observe the people you can see. Pachys are common here it seems so you can't assume all or none of them are looking for you. Additionally it wasn't like the group after you wore uniforms, so literally anyone you see on the street could be one of them. You let out a sigh as you stop looking and lean against the building in thought. The worst part is that all they would really have to do is watch three places. There was a wall around the city with a north gate, a south gate, and one ferry that would travel to a fishing village a mile or two down the shore of the lake. All they'd really have to do is stick a couple people at each of those locations to watch for you leaving. The chances of getting out of here unseen were exactly zero you realized, and you weren't quite sure what to do.

You walked back to the group and let them know what you were thinking, and asked if any of them had any ideas because you were kind of stumped.

"Is there any possibility that we could outrun them or something even if they saw us leaving" Jane asked.

"The problem is we aren't all riding a raptor to outrun them" you respond.

"On those Pachys they'll be able to overtake us by the time we're over the first hill and out of sight from the town" you add.

"I don't know if there is much choice but to repeat what we did last time" you offer without looking them in the eyes.

"No" Yvette firmly states. "If you think you're going to put us through something like that again you're mistaken" she adds. You notice her eyes are watering up.

"Yvette is right" Annabel chimes in.

"We aren't helpless in a fight, and I believe we killed more than you did last time" she says crossing her arms.

"If we are going to get out of this then it will be fighting together when they come" Yvette states. There is no room for negotiation in her voice.

"Besides" Jane adds "They likely know about the rest of us by now anyways. It isn't likely that they'll ignore us again" she says crossing her arms as well. You think about it for a second and realize she's right. Sean would have told them about your love of Yvette and likely others saw you with Annabel and Jane. As much as you'd want them to not say anything, it wouldn't take much persuasion to do so, and you bet their persuasion tactics were less than ethical. If they couldn't capture you, then capturing them would be ideal as that would make you come to them. You were starting to entertain the idea of swimming during the night to escape.

Suddenly Nadine appeared in the middle of your group scaring the crap out of you all again.

"Nadine" you say with some exasperation in your voice "You have got to warn us you're coming first" you say trying to let your heart settle a little.

"But then I couldn't see your funny faces" she offers with a chuckle. You raise your eyebrow and smile, but drop it for now.

"You can't get out of here without being seen" she offers with a surprising calmness in her voice.

"Yes, we were just discussing that" you respond.

"So then maybe you should just not be seen at all" she offers with a smirk.

"What do you mean" Yvette asks to clear the confusion you all have.

"A simple magically imbued potion" she says holding up 7 glowing vials.

"Those are not simple" Annabel chimes in with a surprised look on her face. She very quickly adapts the same smirk Nadine has, and the two women share a knowing look. You study the vials, but surprisingly your innate knowledge doesn't kick in for them, and you realize you have no idea what they are.

"Uh...what are they exactly" Jane asks.

"Invisibility potions" Nadine and Annabel answer in unison. You can almost feel the tension in the group dissipate at the idea of walking out of the gate completely unseen.

"How long do they last" you ask.

"Right around two hours" Nadine answers "It isn't exact, so give or take fifteen minutes" she quickly adds. Two hours should be more than enough time to get out of here and over a hill and out of sight. Sight might be a problem though.

"We won't be able to see each other will we" you ask.

"Nope" Annabel answers "They tend to be very situational for group use" she offers.

"That might be a problem if we want to stick together" you say thinking out loud.

"No it won't be" Jane says. You all look to her for explanation. "Really, I'm the only one who knows what to do" she asks. Several faces, including your own, sour at her failure to explain.

"Ok...ok, the answer is simple. We ladies fit on Bruce, and John rides Copper. Their senses are way better than ours so either one could follow the other. I'd suggest Bruce goes first and Copper follows" she explains.

"That...would work" you nod at Jane.

"I'd recommend taking the potions relatively close to each other so they wear out around the same time" Nadine says with a much more sly smirk this time "Preferably all together" she offers. Annabel lets out a chuckle and you can't help but wonder what is up. However, there isn't much choice so you plan it out. You will be on Copper, and the ladies will be on Bruce. Both you and Jane will feed the potion to Copper and Bruce, then take your own potion, mount up, and then Jane will call out that she is moving towards the south gate. From there it is up to Copper to follow where Jane steers Bruce. Copper seems to understand the concept so you feel confident. In the event of getting split up you agree to meet up along the shore a ways down, but if you can stay together you'll just head south together. You all thank and hug Nadine for her help once again, and get into positions. 3...2...1...you and Jane give the potion to Copper and Bruce as the remaining girls down their potions. Immediately you see them start to slowly disappear, but not before you see their faces. Copper and Bruce gag, while the other's immediately complain about how bitter it tastes.

"Oh my gods that is foul" you hear Yvette complain right before she is gone from sight.

You give Nadine a look of "you could have warned us" but she just shrugs and motions for you and Jane to drink yours. You look at Jane and nod your head, and you both upend your vials into your mouths. To say it was bitter was an understatement. This almost burned your mouth it was so bitter. You can hear Nadine and Annabel laughing as you try to focus on anything but the taste, but you fail miserably to do so. Fortunately it doesn't linger like you expected and soon the taste is gone.

"Ok let's mount up Jane" you order. You hear several grunts and Jane apologizing as she mounts up on Bruce, and you quickly mount Copper with no issue. A moment later Jane calls out she is moving out, and you once again thank Nadine.

"No need for thanks John, and I will see you in a week or so" she says blowing a kiss into the air with her hand.

Nadine is gone, and you urge Copper to follow Bruce.

The way out was surprisingly easy. There were a few close calls of people almost walking into you, and you suspect Jane had her hands full keeping out of the paths of people and carts, but you were soon at the south gate. It took several minutes for an opening between people for Bruce to sneak through the gate, but once she made her move Copper quickly followed through. You did see a group of people just watching the gate, and you knew it was them, but you just flipped them the silent bird and rode on. Several miles later and out of earshot of anyone else, you called out to the group to make sure they were still there.

"We're all here" Yvette answered back.

"Ok good, let's just keep heading south until this potion wears off" you announce, and the group continued south.

Even more miles later and well out of sight of the city the potion wears off one by one within minutes of each other. The group is all smiles from successfully ditching whoever was after you, and you all begin chatting with each other. Closer to night time you scout ahead and find a nice recessed spot to camp for the night and guide the group to it. Once there you all begin setting up camp. This time with a nice tent, good food, and pleasant company. It doesn't take long for the group to tire though with the stress from today, and rather than stay up for a little longer you all decide to turn in. Copper takes his guard role seriously again and runs off to scout for the group and find his spot to bed down. It doesn't take long for sleep to find you as you wonder about what the trip south will bring.
