Chapter 26

Do you?

Yes, drive to her place

'Of course, I'll come right away,' you tell her, and hang up.

A few minutes later, you're ringing the doorbell of Alice and Pascal's lovely house, in the middle of the small suburbs of your home town. Alice opens the door relatively quickly, and invites you in. She leads you into their living room, where she sits you down on the couch.

'Do you want anything to drink?' she asks.

'Maybe just a water,' you tell her.

A few moments later, she returns with a bottle of wine, and a glass of water. 'You don't mind if I drink, do you?'

You glance at the clock. It's 11 o'clock in the morning.

She sees you looking, and says; 'It's just very stressful for me, you know. I hope you understand.'

'Of course!' you say, sympathizing with her. 'You know what, pour me a glass too. After what I just experienced, I need some.'

She smiles, relieved, and you recognize her gratitude. She doesn't need any judgement right now, she needs your support and friendship. She puts the wine and glass down, then walks to the kitchen once more, to get wine glasses.

'How are you feeling?' you ask a little helplessly when she returns.

'Well, like shit obviously,' she answers sighing, when she sits down next to you. 'I always had this feeling... but now, having to face the reality, it's totally different.'

'I understand,' you tell her. 'I went through the same thing with Brooke.' She was your girlfriend in high school for a long time, the hottest girl in the whole place in your opinion. You had been intensely in love with her, but she eventually cheated on you, in a very brutal way. The whole experience had been incredibly traumatizing, so you can imagine what Alice must be going through now.

'Oh, yeah, I had forgotten about that,' she says, pouring both of glasses full of wine. 'You caught them in the act right?'

'Yes,' you answer bitterly. 'It was horrible. And I felt miserable and insecure for a while. And that was incredibly painful. For months. But in the end, I accepted the fact that she was an incredibly mean and dishonest person.' You laugh and take a sip of wine. 'Cheers.'

She picks up her glass too, and takes a big sip. 'Cheers.' She laughs, before turning serious again. 'But weren't you incredibly angry?'

'Oh yes,' you tell her. 'I still am. But anger for a person is much easier to live with than a broken heart. Once you're not in love with someone anymore, it's easier to continue with your life. Just remember that it's not you, but him. Then cheating can actually be a blessing, because it gives you the right to be angry, instead of miserable.'

She looks at you then, straight into your eyes. 'Can I ask you a question?'

'Of course.'

'Do you think Pascal could do this to me?'

You think about your answer carefully, before answering. Do you tell her your honest feelings about Pascal, or do you talk around the truth?

Honest or not?
