Riva returned to her chambers and freshened up, washing away the lingering heat from the square before changing into a lighter gown for lunch. She joined her friends in the private dining chamber, where conversation flowed easily over light wine and plates of roasted meats and spiced fruits. Gossip circled the table: affairs between courtiers, whispers of border skirmishes, and a particularly salacious tale about a visiting merchant caught with two of the queen’s handmaidens. Riva tried her best to actively take part in the conversations, but the hungry ache below kept her from getting fully involved.
