Any luck in the stacks of books and scrolls?
Yes, but in an unexpected fashion
The pair made their way to the library. It was unattended, but that was to be expected. Whomever was responsible for the tomes and documents held here had likely been pulled to aid the refugees or had died in the struggle. The travelers entered. A torch was unnecessary in the daylight as the sun streamed through windows, albeit a few damaged ones from the struggle. The library itself, however, was mostly unharmed. Stacks of books and scrolls laid out in front of them for what seemed like fathoms.
Brynn sighed. "So what are we even looking for? Asmodeus will have died of old age before we find anything in this pile of dung!"
Marielle wanted to disagree, to defend her order, but the reality was she spent little time here, only coming by when she needed information on a new creature or infernal spell, and that was always with the assistance of the librarian. "I know they keep the works related to high demons over here", she spoke softly as she gestured to the back of the room. "It's as good a place to start as any."
They made their way to the section, somehow it seemed older, dustier, danker than the rest, although that was maybe because it was at the back of the building. They began to scan the shelves, grabbing any book that made any reference to Asmodeus, though none of the titles mentioned the compass. Hands full, and Brynn out of complaints, they began to make their way to a reading table.
Until a crash deeper into the section caused them to stop. Then they heard curses in a language they didn't understand. They drew their blades and rounded the corner to find a small demon who froze in place for a moment, then roared as he drew his blade. Brynn held her staff, and a gout of ice shot from the tip towards the demon, piercing his shoulder. A small worm bounced free and slithered on the floor, unseen by Marielle, it advanced towards her, climbing up her boot, and bit into her ankle. The paladin screamed, and tried to kick her boot free to identify her assailant. The demon used this opportunity to draw a sling, whizzing a rock by her head.
Brynn closed on the imp and struck it down with her blade as Marielle finally managed to kick her boot off. The worm, sensing its exposure, moved further up her leg. Brynn dove for her ankles, grabbing an end of the now engorged worm and pulling it free. Marielle took the opportunity to skewer the aberration before it had time to wriggle away. After a more thorough examination of their surroundings to ensure that they actually were alone, and a bandaging of a rather nasty bite wound, the two searched the imp. The found a sack with a number of books in it. The topics ranged from epic poetry on wars with the gods to accounts of demonic influence to legendary artifact sites.
"Well, that was convenient." Brynn scoffed, "Tiny here did all the searching for us."
"Speak for yourself, " Marielle spat back. "You didn't take a bite from some demon worm."
"On the bright side, I think that was the first monster we've encountered that didn't try to fuck us."
Marielle's withering look ended the discussion there, and the two set to work on combing the nearly pilfered literature. Brynn spoke up first.
"I think I've got something on the compass." She turned the book to her partner so she could read. "This work speaks of a compass that has the power to point to objects of great magical power. Apparently an individual with a strong enough will can use it to seek an object they desire."
"If that's what this is, it makes sense why Asmodeus would want it. The demon of lust would have a strong enough will to find whatever he needed. The question, however, is what he wants to find. I think I have a lead." It was her turn to show her work. "This book references an infernal forge that could fashion new demonic artifacts. What more would a demon need than an arsenal of demonically infused swords and arrows?"
"That's great, well not the arsenal bit, but its a lead. Does it say where this is?"
"No, but I have an idea." Marielle pulled out the compass. It sat there, spinning listlessly. Marielle held it in her hand, closed her eyes, and tried to will the compass to point to the forge. Suddenly, it spun with renewed purpose, and while it certainly didn't point north, it pointed in a steady direction.
"Well now we know where to head. We may not know where the demon is, but we can take a tool out of his toolbelt."
On the road again?
