So in DxD, basically if its supernatural and religious setup, its real but setup with various stuff to avoid each other and keep the truth hidden from humans.

But some humans are granted a blessing from the biblical god, called Sacred Gears

Items that come in many types and rarities, bestowing special abilities, most of these are under the radar stuff that work perfectly in the human world and many humans that were great in the past are considered to likely have possessed one of these gears.
But there are other type of gears, these grant fantastical abilities and have been the spark of many super power concepts in the past.

Then there is an important thing to note, Demons, Devils... they exist BUT they are not inheritly evil, they are basically the same as humans, you have evil devils and good devils and neutral ones, they are just driven more by their own desires then humans and possess special abilities that are inborn traits, such as demonic power, a source of magic basically, weakness to light, being physically stronger and having perfect nigh vision, stronger hearing during the night as well and naturally bat like wings.

Also they do still make deals with humans to fulfill their wishes and desired, but they don't take souls anymore, the prize is as equal to the wish as possible, unless the human wishes to give something bigger.

However in a war long ago between the heavens and the fallen angels, they all suffered and the devils lost most of their numbers, even many of the 72 houses were considered extinct.
With a low birthrate, they had to find a new way to survive as a species, which sparked the birth of the evil piece system.

Named so mostly cause of how devils are considered evil, these chess based pieces can turn any creature into a devil hybrid while granting them an ability as well.
Through there are limits to use them, an high class devil alone is given these pieces and based on the devils own powers, or the abilities of the entire peerage, will reflect how strong an person can be changes, after all if the target is too strong, then the "king" cannot revive them.

And I mean Revive as these evil pieces can return an recently deceased person back to live.

The pieces each also contain an value, which also limits who can be revived with which piece, adding that a king has to consider which piece to give from the available ones.
-Queen: value of 9 pawns, gives an boost to defense, magic power and potential and speed.
-Rook: Value of 5 pawns, gives an massive boost to strength and defenses, to or past super human levels, they also can trade locations with their respective king.
-Knight: Value of 3 pawns, gives a massive boost to speed.
-Bishop: Value of 3 pawns, gives an boost to magical power and magical recovery.
-Pawn: value of a pawn, allows switching to any other piece except the king, in any area marked by the king as enemy territory.

All enhancements are based by the targets own abilities and potential but are very significant regardless.

It also has been stated that the evil pieces hold many hidden secrets and tricks by their creator, a little fact I took to add to my group for the fun of it.
Also I forgot before but there are evil pieces called Mutation pieces, at best an high class devil can have 1 mutation piece, how they are distributed are unclear but it seems bound on either luck or connections, regardless an Mutation piece is not bound by value, so one could for example use an mutation pawn to reincarnate an literal god under the rule of the weakest high class devil ever (off course something like that has never happened before as far as known but its a good example)
